Why Are STIs Important?

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were historically referred to as “venereal diseases.” The term “venereal” is derived from “venery,” which connotes sexual pleasure and indulgence, carrying a moral judgment that implies the disease arises from immoral behavior. However, this perception is misleading. In reality, STIs can occur between married couples or committed partners. Because these infections can affect anyone regardless of lifestyle, the term “sexually transmitted infection” is now preferred to reduce social stigma. This book also intentionally uses the term “sexually transmitted infections” throughout.

STIs are often asymptomatic, making early diagnosis difficult. In many cases, individuals are unaware of their infection due to the absence or mildness of symptoms. Delayed treatment increases the risk of complications and transmission to others. Some infections can be transmitted with just a single sexual encounter. Furthermore, STIs are not limited to minor infections—they can cause serious complications such as infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and even cancer. In pregnant women, STIs can lead to congenital infections in newborns, potentially causing severe and life-threatening health problems.

STIs can spread as easily as COVID-19. However, unlike COVID-19, they often remain invisible to others and are difficult to trace due to privacy concerns. Therefore, acquiring accurate knowledge, practicing prevention, undergoing early diagnosis, maintaining personal hygiene, and receiving regular urologic check-ups are essential.
