국문 초록

The critically acclaimed and popular web television series (Netflix, 2019-present) is an effective case study of how complexity of concept and storyline featured in the open end serial drama in the United States is employed towards finding a niche viewership among the plethora of shows available for consumption. utilizes the science fiction trope of the time loop to create a series that combines science fiction with mystery, drama, comedy, and even metaphysics. The time loop in takes on the form of a spiral story structure where its two main characters stuck in the time loop discover their own cycles of repeated behavior, much in a manner of a video game design, to find the right strategy to break the cycle. While other science fiction television shows employ time loops as a narrative conceit, ’s innovative approach is constructing its entire first season chronologically as a temporal spiral. Therefore, this article examines ’s narratology by exploring how its time loop is structured and embodies the episodic and serial formats based on its narrative traits of repetition and progression respectively.

영문 초록

호평과 인기를 동시에 얻고 있는 웹 텔레비전 시리즈 <러시안 인형처럼> (넷플릭스, 2019-현재)은 컨셉과 스토리라인이 복잡한 특징을 띤 개방형 결말의 미국 시리즈 드라마로서 효과적인 케이스 스터디인데, 이 드라마는 과잉공급의 드라마 소비시장에서 틈새 시청자들을 사로잡고 있다. <러시안 인형처럼>은 SF에, 미스터리, 드라마, 코미디, 심지어 형이상학까지 혼합된 창작 시리즈물로서 반복되는 시간 루프안에서의 SF 수사법을 활용하였다. <러시안 인형처럼>에서 시간 루프는 나선형 스토리 구조 형태를 취하고 있는데 이는 두 명의 주요 인물이 시간 루프에 갇히게 되면서 계속 반복되는 행동의 사이클을 발견하게 되고, 그 반복되는 사이클을 깨기 위한 적합한 전략을 찾아가는 흡사 비디오 게임의 방식을 따르고 있다. 다른 SF 텔레비전 드라마가 시간 고리를 단지 서술적인 효과로 쓰는 것에 반해 "러시안 인형처럼"은 시즌1 전체를 시간 나선형으로 연대순 구성을 하는 혁신적인 접근을 하고 있다. 그러므로 본 논문은 시간 고리가 드라마에 어떻게 구조적으로 반영됐는지를 탐구하는 방식으로 "러시안 인형처럼"의 서사학 연구를 하고 있으며 반복과 연속을 각각 서술의 특성으로 기본들 둔 단막극이면서도 연속극인 형태인 드라마를 연구하고 있다.
