국문 초록

통념상 데카르트의 ｢정념론｣은 인간의 감정과 그 감정을 조절하는 방식을 다룬 정서이론이라고 알려져 있다. 그러나 이 책에서 데카르트가 밝히고 있는 정념은 인간 사고의 한 측면에 해당한다. 데카르트에게 사고는 영혼의 기능이다. 이 사고를 데카르트는두 가지로 구분하여 영혼의 능동에 해당하는 ‘의지’와 영혼의 수동에 해당하는 ‘정념’으로 설명한다. ‘의지’는 오직 영혼 그 자체로서의 사고이며, ‘정념’은 몸의 영향을 받아영혼에 표상되는 지각 중에서도 특별히 ‘의지’로 인하여 영혼에 표상되는 사고이다. ‘의지’는 신이 인간에게 부여한 인식능력으로서, 앎의 이상적 표준에 해당한다면, ‘정념’은 몸의 영향을 받아 우리에게 표상되는 지각 또는 지식이다. 인간의 영혼이 ‘언제나 단일한 하나’라는 데카르트의 주장에 의하면, ‘정념’은 ‘의지’와 다른 것이 아니다. 다만 ‘정념’은 각 개인이 지식을 배운 정도에 따라 신적 의지를 정도껏 실현한 사고이다. 이렇게 볼 때, ‘정념’은 우리 마음 안에서 벌어지는 일체의 작용들, 즉 마음의 동적 측면에 해당한다. 신성에 힘입어 인간의 인식이 가능하다는 데카르트의 주장은 우리가 신의 뜻을 기꺼이 따르며 살 수밖에 없다는 종교적 정서를 불러일으킨다고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Descartes’ The Passions of the Soul is often regarded as an affective theory that deals with human emotions and the ways in which they may be regulated. However, the ‘passions’ that Descartes reveals in this work correspond to a particular dimension of human thought. For Descartes, thought is the function of the soul, which he divides into two aspects: the action of the soul, which is volition, and the passion of the soul, which is passion. Volition is thought belonging solely to the soul itself, whereas passions are the perceptions or knowledge represented in the soul under the influence of the body, and especially those that arise in the soul through the mediation of volition. Volition is the faculty of the knowledge which God gave us and represents the ideal standard of knowledge. Passions, by contrast, are the perceptions or knowledge that is represented to us under the influence of bodily operations. According to Descartes’ claim that the human soul is ‘always a single thing’, passions are not essentially different from volition. Rather, passions are thought that realizes the divine will to a certain degree, depending on the extent of knowledge each individual has acquired. From this perspective, passions correspond to the dynamic aspects of the mind—that is, the manifold operations that unfold within it. Descartes’ assertion that human perception is made possible by divine power thus evokes a religious sentiment: that we are bound to live in willing accordance with the will of God.
