국문 초록

인간의 삶에서 가르침과 배움이 어떤 의미를 지니는가 하는 점을 고찰하기 위하여 이 글에서 필자는 ｢논어｣의 첫머리에 나타난 ‘好學의 정신’에 의존하였다. 이 호학의 정신은 동아시아인들에게 오늘날까지도 면면히 계승되고 있다고 말할 수 있기 때문이다. ｢논어｣에 나타난 호학의 정신은 배움을 추구하는 일은 ‘삶의 형식으로서의 道’를 내면화하는 일이요, 이 일은 곧 당사자의 심성함양을 위한 일이라는 점을 잘 보여준다. 이처럼 배움을 심성함양을 위한 실천으로 규정한다면, 가르침은 그 배움과 결코 분리될 수 없다. ‘敎學相長’에 관한 ｢예기｣의 진술은 가르침은 배움의 연시이며 배움의 완성이라는 점을 비교적 선명하게 보여준다. ‘실천의 실천’을 뜻하는 메타프락시스는 가르침과 배움의 이러한 관련을 온전히 드러내는 관점을 보여준다.

영문 초록

To explicate the relations between teaching and learning, as well as the notions of the both, this paper relies on the spirit of ‘loving of learning’(好學) presented in the opening passages of The Analects of Confucius. This spirit is considered to have been a cornerstone of East Asian educational thoughts and practices, persisting continuously to the present day. The spirit of ‘loving of learning’ described in The Analects posits that the pursuit of learning is a process of internalizing the ‘Dao’(道) as the ‘form of life’, and fundamentally an practices for the cultivation of one’s mind and body. Learning is conceptualized as a practical discipline for cultivating one’s inner self, then teaching and learning are intrinsically inseparable. The statements of connections of teaching and learning in the Book of Rites (禮記) provides a clear illustration of this relationship, showing that teaching is the enactment and culmination of learning. Contrary to metaphysics, ‘metapraxis’, literally means ‘the practice of practice’, offers a theoretical perspective for understanding this unique character of teaching and the inner connection between teaching and learning.
