A Literature Review of Speech-Language Characteristics in Semantic Variant Primary Progressive Aphasia

The purpose of this study is to examine recent research trends on the speech and language characteristics of semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) from 2010 to the present in order to facilitate the accurate interpretation and application of clinical criteria in clinical practice. A total of 53 studies were selected and classified according to language modalities (verbal comprehension, expression, written language, and speech) and linguistic components (semantics, syntax, and pragmatics). Although the overall speech and language characteristics of svPPA include difficulties in word comprehension and noun expression, their comprehension and expression of syntax are relatively spared. Additionally, they tend to request more information during conversations and exhibit regularization in reading and writing. This study is a systematic review that analyzes the detailed abilities based on the language characteristics of svPPA and synthesizes the findings. Its significance lies in aiding the interpretation of various language pathology symptoms observed in actual clinical cases, based on international diagnostic criteria, and actively supporting the diagnostic process for Korean svPPA patients.
