Adapting to Waters: Socio-economic Influences on Flood Coping Strategies Among Farmers in Bangladesh’s Char Areas

Bangladesh experiences recurrent flooding, significantly affecting its agriculture-based economy. Farmers in Char areas (riverine islands) are particularly vulnerable, highlighting the urgent need for effective flood coping strategies to sustain their livelihoods. The study assessed the adoption status of flood coping strategies among farmers, examined the relationship between selected socio-economic characteristics and the extent of their adoption of these strategies, and identified the challenges that farmers face when implementing climate-resilient farming practices. Data were collected from 112 household heads living in Islampur Upazila under Jamalpur, Bangladesh. A correlation analysis was conducted to explore the factors influencing the adoption decision. Results showed a significant increase in the cultivation of Rabi crops either before flooding or after water levels receded. The findings reveal that higher levels of education, greater farming experience, and more exposure to training are strongly associated with increased adoption of coping strategies. The socio-economic factors play a crucial role in determining farmers’ resilience practices. The study underscores the need to enhance educational and training opportunities to reduce the gap between adopters and non-adopters. Additionally, high input costs and limited accessibility were found to be major barriers to the widespread adoption of flood coping strategies. These insights provide important implications for policy interventions aimed at strengthening and resilience of farming communities in flood-prone regions.

영문 초록

방글라데시는 반복적인 홍수로 인해 농업 기반 경제에 심각한 영향을 받고 있다. 특히 하천(Char) 지역의 농민들은 이러한 재해로부터 큰 피해를 받고 있으며, 생계를 유지하기 위한 효과적인 홍수 대응 전략이 시급히 요구된다. 본 연구는 농민들의 홍수 대응 전략 채택 현황을 평가하고, 선택된 사회경제적 특성과 이러한 전략 채택 정도 간의 관계를 분석하였으며, 기후 회복력 있는 농업 관행을 시행할 때 농민들이 직면하는 문제들을 파악하였다. 자료는 방글라데시 자말푸르 지역의 이슬람푸르 우파질라에 거주하는 112명의 가구주로부터 수집되었다. 채택 결정에 영향을 미치는 요인을 탐색하기 위해 상관관계 분석이 수행되었다. 연구 결과, 홍수 이전이나 물이 빠진 후 라비 작물의 재배가 크게 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 분석 결과, 교육 수준, 농업 경험, 교육훈련 참여 경험이 높을수록 홍수 대응 전략의 채택률이 높다는 사실이 밝혀졌다. 이러한 사회경제적 요인은 농민들의 회복력 있는 농업 실천 여부에 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 연구는 채택자와 비채택자 간의 격차를 줄이기 위해 교육과 훈련 기회를 확대할 필요성을 강조한다. 또한, 높은 투입 비용과 접근성 부족이 홍수 대응 전략의 광범위한 채택을 저해하는 주요 요인으로 확인되었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 홍수 취약 지역에 거주하는 농업 공동체의 회복력을 강화하기 위한 정책적 수립에 중요한 시사점을 제공한다.
