This study explores the relationship between participation in irrigation schemes and the adoption of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) among smallholder farmers in the Zomba District of Malawi. Although SRI has the potential to improve rice yields, its adoption remains limited among small-scale farmers in developing countries. By focusing on participation in irrigation schemes as a key variable, this research investigates how involvement in such schemes influences farmers’ knowledge and application of SRI practices. The study evaluates farmers’ understanding and implementation of soil, plant, weed, and water management techniques, identifies challenges to adoption, and proposes strategic responses. A survey was conducted involving 200 farmers, including both irrigation scheme participants and non-participants. Descriptive statistical and comparative analyses were used to evaluate differences between the two groups. The findings reveal that farmers participating in irrigation schemes demonstrate significantly higher knowledge and application of SRI practices compared to non-participants. Key factors influencing adoption include irrigation scheme membership, farming experience, access to reliable water sources, and problem-solving capacity. These results underscore the importance of irrigation scheme participation in facilitating SRI adoption. Accordingly, future policy efforts should prioritize expanding irrigation access and strengthening support systems for farmers to encourage the uptake of sustainable rice cultivation practices.

영문 초록

이 연구는 말라위(Malawi) 좀바 지역 소농의 관개 계획 참여와 벼 강화 시스템(SRI) 도입 간의 관계분석을 목적으로 한다. SRI는 벼 수확량을 중대시킬 잠재력을 가지고 있지만, 개발도상국의 소규모 농가에서는 도입이 제한적인 현실이다. 이에 본 연구는 관개 계획 참여가 농가의 SRI 지식과 적용에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석하기 위해 토양, 식물, 잡초 및 수자원 관리 기술에 대한 농가의 이해와 적용을 평가하고, 도입 시 발생하는 어려움을 파악하며, 전략적 대응방안을 제시하고자 한다. 총 200명의 응답자를 대상으로 구조화된 가구 설문조사를 통해 데이터를 수집하고 사업참여자와 비참여자 간의 차이를 분석했다. 연구 관과 관개 계획에 참여하는 농가는 SRI에 대한 지식과 적용 수준이 비참여 농가보다 유의미하게 높은 것으로 나타났다. SRI 도입에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인으로는 관개 계획 가입 여부, 농업 경험, 안정적인 수원 접근성, 문제 해결 능력으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 SRI 도입을 추진하는 데 있어 관개 계획 참여의 중요성을 강조하며, 향후 지속 가능한 벼 재배 방법의 도입을 장려하기 위해 관개 접근성 확대와 농민 지원 시스템 강화에 집중해야 함을 시사한다.
