대학생이 지니는 핵심역량 및 핵심역량 기반 교육과정의 의미

국문 초록

본 연구는 핵심역량 및 핵심역량 기반 교육과정에 대한 대학생들의 의미를 알아보기 위해 A대학에 재학 중인 대학생 20명을 심층 면담하였으며, 이를 전사하여 분석한 결과 핵심역량에 대한 대학생들의 인식은 ‘삶에 필요한 핵심역량’, ‘다가가기 어려운 핵심역량’과 같이 총 2개의 하위범주로 구성되어, 대학생들이 생애주기 관점에서 핵심역량을 증진하는 것은 매우 중요하게 인식하였으나 상대적으로 핵심역량의 개념 및 단어가 생소하고 모호해 그 의미를 직관적으로 이해하여 삶에 적용하는데 어려움이 있음을 나타냈다. 다음으로 핵심역량 기반 교육과정에 대한 대학생들의 인식은 ‘실체 없는 핵심역량 기반 교육과정’, ‘우연히 발견한 교육과정 속 핵심역량’, ‘핵심역량 기반 교육과정에 대한 기대’와 같이 총 3개의 하의범주가 구성되었어, 학교 문서상에만 명시되어있을 뿐 대학생들이 경험한 핵심역량 기반 교육과정에서 핵심역량의 실제를 파악하는데 어려움이 있었으나, 예기치 못한 수업 속 주도적인 참여, 협력 경험들로 자연스럽게 역량이 증진되었다고 느꼈다. 이에 대해 대학생들은 핵심역량 기반 교육과정에서 핵심역량이 강조되기 위해서는 대학생들이 필요로 하는 역량이 무엇인지에 대한 반영이 필요하며, 수업을 통한 핵심역량 증진 정도를 진단할 수 있는 평가도구가 필요하다고 주장하였다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 바탕으로 시대적 흐름에 따른 핵심역량 개편을 위해 대학 구성원 전체의 의견을 종합적으로 수렴하는 민주적 합의절차가 필요하며, 대학교육의 본질적인 역할과 사회적 요구가 함께 추구될 수 있도록 하기 위한 융합교육체제 구축의 필요성을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study explores university students’ perceptions of core competencies and core competency-based curricula in the context of higher education. Through in-depth interviews with 20 undergraduate students at University A, the research aims to understand how students interpret and experience these concepts in their academic lives. The analysis revealed that students recognized core competencies as essential for navigating various aspects of life, including future careers and personal growth. However, they also perceived the terminology and concepts associated with core competencies as abstract, unfamiliar, and difficult to internalize or apply meaningfully. Regarding core competency-based curricula, students expressed that although core competencies are formally emphasized in institutional documents, their actual presence within the curriculum was often unclear or difficult to identify. Nevertheless, students reported that unintentional development of core competencies occurred through active classroom participation, collaboration, and problem-solving experiences. Based on these findings, students highlighted the need for a clearer alignment between curriculum design and the real-world competencies they value. They also emphasized the importance of assessment tools that can accurately measure the development of such competencies throughout their learning journey. This study suggests that to effectively foster core competencies, universities must engage in a democratic, institution-wide consensus process and establish an integrated educational framework that connects the essential goals of higher education with evolving societal demands.
