This study aims to synthesize qualitative research on the recovery experiences of male gambling addicts using a meta-ethnographic approach. While qualitative research on gambling recovery has increased, the recovery process of male gamblers remains underexplored, and limited attention has been paid to the relevance of gender. To address this gap, nine qualitative studies were selected and analyzed using the methodology proposed by Noblit and Hare (1988). The analysis yielded three overarching synthetic themes - “voluntary commitment to gambling abstinence,” “efforts to restore functionality and stability,” and “proactive life reconstruction” - that encompass 23 descriptive themes. These themes describe the complex interplay of psychological, relational, and social factors that influence the initiation and maintenance of abstinence, strategies to prevent relapse and promote recovery, process outcomes, and the transformation of self-identity during the recovery process. While the included studies did not examine gender in gambling recovery the findings drawn exclusively from male participants highlight the need for a gender perspective in understanding gambling recovery. Drawing on findings from Western literature, this study discusses how gender norms and dynamics may shape recovery trajectories of Korean male gambling addicts. These findings emphasize the importance of developing gender-sensitive interventions and the value of incorporating a gender lens into future research and practices on gambling addiction recovery.
