국문 초록

The purpose of this study is to look back on the history of English usage and analyze the English words currently used in English that were borrowed from French. Therefore, by analyzing English vocabulary through the lower class who used English and the upper class who used French, and at the same time examining the influence of French on English vocabulary borrowed from French, the English vocabulary borrowed from French was classified into four categories: French borrowing words related to the family, French borrowing words related to the legal field, French borrowing words related to clothing and fashion, and French borrowing words related to science and academics. Although this paper clearly has limitations, it is expected that by examining the vocabulary used by the lower class who used English and the upper class who used French, and by classifying the vocabulary from French into four categories through these words, this study will provide positive research meaning to researchers and learners of English.

영문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 영어 사용의 역사를 되돌아보고, 현재 영어에서 사용되고 있는 프랑스어 차용 어휘를 분석하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 영어를 사용했던 하층 계층과 프랑스어를 사용했던 상류 계층을 통해 영어 어휘를 분석하고, 동시에 영어 어휘에 미친 프랑스어의 영향을 살펴봄으로써, 프랑스어에서 차용된 영어 어휘를 네 가지 범주로 분류하였다. 이 네 가지 범주는 가족과 관련된 프랑스어 차용어, 법률 분야와 관련된 프랑스어 차용어, 의복 및 패션과 관련된 프랑스어 차용어, 그리고 과학 및 학문 분야와 관련된 프랑스어 차용어이다. 물론 본 연구에는 명확한 한계점이 존재하지만, 영어를 사용했던 하층 계층과 프랑스어를 사용했던 상류 계층의 어휘를 분석하고, 이를 통해 프랑스어 차용 어휘를 네 가지 범주로 분류함으로써 영어 연구자 및 학습자에게 긍정적인 연구적 의미를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
