Effects of TETE Classes Using Pop Songs on Middle School Students' English Listening Skills and Learning Attitudes

국문 초록

This study researched the effects of a popsong-based TETE (Teaching English Through English) approach on the English listening skills and affective factors of first-year middle school students. Conducted over five months at K Middle School in Jeollabuk-do, South Korea, the study involved a control group receiving traditional textbook-based lessons and an experimental group using pop songs in TETE lessons. The first hypothesis is that these lessons would improve listening proficiency, while the second hypothesized positive effects on affective factors. Pre tests and post tests showed significant improvement in the listening skills of the experimental group. Moreover, the experimental group demonstrated positive changes in all affective factors, including increased interest and decreased anxiety. The findings suggest that using pop songs in TETE not only enhances listening skills but also boosts motivation, reduces anxiety, and fosters greater interest and confidence in learning English.

영문 초록

본 연구는 전북 농촌에 위치한 K 중학교의 중학교 1학년 학생들을 대상으로, 원어민 TETE(Teaching English Through English) 수업에서 팝송을 활용한 영어 수업이 학생들의 영어 듣기 능력과 정의적 요인에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 연구 가설은 첫째, 팝송을 활용한 수업이 듣기 능력 향상에 효과가 있으며, 둘째, 학습 태도와 정의적 요인에도 긍정적인 영향을 줄 것이라고 설정하였다. 사전 동질성 검사 결과 두 집단 간 유의미한 차이는 없었으며, 사후 검사에서는 실험집단만이 유의미한 향상을 보였다(t = -4.452, p = .000). 정의적 요인은 실험집단은 긍정적인 변화를 보였으며, 특히 불안감은 유의미하게 감소하였다(t = 2.115, p = .045). 연구결과는 팝송 활용 수업이 학습자의 영어 듣기 능력 향상뿐만 아니라 심리적 안정과 학습 동기 유발에도 효과적임을 보여준다.
