The development of beauty education in Korea is grounded in the establishment of a higher education system and the implementation of the National Competency Standards (NCS), which are unparalleled on a global scale. This study focuses on two recently developed and applied NCS competency units—scalp and hair care, and wig hairstyling—reflecting recent changes and advancements in the beauty industry. A survey was conducted with 162 hair beauty professionals from March 1 to March 20, 2025. The survey evaluated each competency unit in terms of educational experience and self-assessed job performance. Results showed that for scalp and hair care, 58.9% of participants received formal education, while 41.1% learned through informal courses. Regarding certification, 39.5% possessed relevant qualifications. Self-evaluation indicated generally high ratings, especially among experienced professionals such as pro hair designers and assistants. In contrast, 76.5% of respondents reported no education in wig hairstyling, and 94.4% did not hold related certifications. Self-assessment for wig hairstyling was mostly below average, suggesting lower demand in salons. These findings highlight the growing diversity of hairdressers’ roles beyond design. While curriculum development and private certification programs are long-term solutions, there is an urgent need for continuing education for professionals, development of wig-related salon products, and establishment of profit models in the wig sector.
