프로타고라스와 소크라테스의 교육적 쉬누시아 -‘무지한 소피스트’로서 아이러니스트의 탄생-

국문 초록

‘소크라테스와 소피스트는 만날 수 없는 평행선처럼 서로 다른 길을 걸었으며, 전자는 찬양받아 당연하고 후자는 비난받아 마땅하다.’ 이 글은 이런 통념에서 벗어나 소크라테스와 소피스트 사이에 있었을 교육적인 교류를 찾아 밝히기 위한 것이다. 소피스트의 선구자인 프로타고라스와 젊은 시절 소크라테스는 교육적인 모임인 ‘쉬누시아’를 가지며, ‘아레테란 무엇인가?’, ‘인간척도설은 무엇을 말하는가?’, ‘척도인 사람의 변환(탈바꿈)을 가져오는 일로서 교육은 어떤 것인가?’를 놓고 치열하게 가르치고 배운다. 이를 통해 한 사람은 진정한 소피스트의 길을 선보이고, 다른 한 사람은 훗날 산파로서 전대미문의 교육을 펼치는 아이러니스트로 거듭난다. 이상과 같은 논의를 펼치면서 ‘진정한 소피스트는 본래 어떤 일을 하는가?’, ‘프로타고라스와 소크라테스가 주고받은 것은 무엇인가?’, ‘그들이 염두에 둔 사람다운 삶과 앎, 그리고 교육은 무엇인가?’를 새로운 관점에서 밝히고자 한다. 이 글은 ‘삶과 앎과 교육이 서로 영향을 주고받으며 각자답게 정립되면서 동시에 하나로 얽혀 형성하는 독특한 세계’를 그려 보이는 가운데 교육의 모습, 그리고 그것과 공속(共屬)하는 교육적인 삶과 앎의 면모를 자연스럽게 드러내려는 장기적인 연구의 일환으로 작성된 것이다.

영문 초록

‘Socrates and sophists walked different paths like parallel lines that cannot meet. Socrates deserves to be praised as great sage, but sophists deserve to be blamed as corrupt professional teachers.’ This paper aims to challenge and refute this widely-accepted academic opinion about Socrates and sophists by illuminating the educational intercourse called ‘synousia’ between Protagoras and young Socrates. They held intensive educational synousia continuously whenever they meet, and passionately taught and learned about ‘What is arete?’, ‘What is the implications of the theory of man as the measure of all things?’, and ‘How can education transform a man to be more advanced measure?’ Through these educational synousia, Protagoras established the way of true sophist, and Socrates became an ignorant sophist as ironist who carried out unprecedented educational activities with his famous midwifery. This paper can be considered to be an interim report of long term research project trying to redescribe the reciprocal relation of Protagoras and Socrates. Although far from satisfactory, this paper argues that the original form of sophist, Protagoras’ influence on Socrates, and the entanglement of living, knowing and education of Protagoras and Socrates must be rediscussed from new perspective.
