진순(陳淳)의 ‘심합리기설’(心合理氣說)에 대한 조선성리학의 계승과 비판

국문 초록

진순의 ‘심합리기설’(心合理氣說)은 주자 심론(心論)에 대한 계승과 발전으로, 이 명제는 조선 주자학자들이 주자의 심설을 이해하는 데 영향을 미쳤다. 이황은 진순의 심설을 계승하여 구조와 유행의 차원에서 “마음은 이기(理氣)를 겸한다”라고 주장하고, 리(理)가 능동적으로 활동한다는 견해에서 출발하여 ‘리기호발’(理氣互發)설을 가지고 감정의 선악의 내원을 해석하였다. 이이는 이점에 대해 비판적 태도를 견지하면서, 리는 결코 활동할 수 없다고 생각하였고 아울러 마음은 기(氣)라고 간주하고 악을 리에 대한 기의 괴리현상이라고 결론지었다. 이진상은 비록 마음에 리와 기 두 측면이 있다는 점을 인정하였지만 심의 주재(主宰)적 의미에서 출발하여 마음의 본질은 리라고 생각하였고 이 점에 입각하여 ‘심즉리’(心即理)설을 주장하였다.

영문 초록

Chen Chun’s doctrine of “the mind as the synthesis of Li and Qi” represents both an inheritance and a development of Zhu Xi’s theory of the mind. This proposition exerted considerable influence on Korean Neo-Confucian scholars’ interpretation of Zhu Xi’s view of the mind. Yi Hwang (Toegye) adopted Chen Chun’s theory, contending that—in terms of both structure and dynamic manifestation—the mind encompasses both Li and Qi. Proceeding from the premise that Li is capable of activity, he employed the concept of “the reciprocal starting of Li and Qi” to explain the origin of good and evil in human emotions. Yi I (Yulgok) took a critical stance toward this view, arguing that Li lacks the capacity for activity. He identified the mind exclusively with Qi and attributed evil to the deviation of Qi from Li. Although Yi Jinsang (Hanju) also acknowledged these two aspects—Li and Qi— within the mind, he emphasized the mind’s role as a sovereign faculty. Asserting that the essence of the mind is Li, he thereby advanced his own doctrine of “the mind is Li”. 陈淳的“心合理气”说是对朱子心论的继承和发展，这一命题对朝鲜朱子学者理解朱子心说产生了影响。李滉继承了陈淳的心说，认为从构造与流行上来说“心兼理气”，并从理能活动出发，用“理气互发”说阐释了情之善恶的来源。李珥对此持批判态度，认为理并不能活动，并认心为气，将恶归结为气对理的乖离。李震相虽然也承认心含理气这两个面向，却从心之主宰义出发，认为心之本质是理，就此提出了“心即理”说。
