국문 초록

자신의 고유한 신체를 가진 채 태어나는 것은 모든 인간에게 당연한 일이지만, 철학의 역사에서 신체의 지위에 대한 담론은 줄곧 부차적인 것으로 여겨져 왔다. 이러한 역사 속에서 ‘신체’를 중심 주제로 다룬 1940년대의 두 가지 신체현상학적 작업은 기념비적인 사건이다. 본 연구는 메를로-퐁티와 리쾨르가 각각 행한 두 작업의 ‘공통적인 교훈’을 추적해본다. 후설에게 서로 다른 영감을 얻은 두 현상학자는 여러 철학사적 맥락을 독특하게 전유한 끝에 ‘신체’라는 주제를 진지하게 고찰하게 되며, 이때 신체는 완전히 번역 또는 환원되지 않는다는 사실이 확인된다. 신체가 놓인 세계는 인간이 극복할 수 없는 한계이면서도, 동시에 가능성의 장이다. 인간은 신체로서 태어나고, 신체로 세계와 관계한다. 즉, 신체는 인간에게 벗어날 수 없는 한계임과 동시에 자유를 위한 조건의 역할을 담당한다. 지성으로 오롯이 파악되지 않는 신체이지만, 그럼에도 “나는 신체를 지닌 존재자”라는 선소여적 사실을 적극적으로 받아들일 때에야 인간은 살아가면서 마주하는 자유와 한계의 작용에 정당하고 용감한 태도로 임할 수 있다. 학문에서나 삶에서나 자신의 신체를 올바르게 마주하는 일은 삶의 희망을 위해 가장 먼저 해결되어야 할 정초적 작업이다.

영문 초록

Although being born with one’s own body is a natural condition shared by all human beings, throughout the history of philosophy the status of the body has persistently been regarded as secondary. Against this background, the two phenomenological investigations of the body conducted in the 1940s stand as momentous contributions for placing the “body” at the center of the problem of subjectivity. This paper traces the shared insights that emerge from the respective works of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Paul Ricoeur. While drawing different inspirations from Husserl, both phenomenologists come to take the theme of the body seriously through their distinctive appropriations of various philosophical traditions, thereby revealing that the body resists complete translation or reduction into conceptual terms. The bodily world is at once an inescapable limit for human beings and the very field of their possibilities. Human beings are born as bodies and relate to the world through the body; thus, the body functions simultaneously as the limitation from which one cannot escape and as the enabling condition of freedom. Although the body cannot be grasped solely by intellect, it is only by actively acknowledging the primordial fact that “I am a being who has a body” that one can face, with rightful and courageous disposition, the interplay of freedom and limitation encountered in life. In both philosophical inquiry and lived experience, facing one’s own embodied existence properly is a foundational task that must be addressed first for the sake of sustaining hope in life.
