국문 초록

본 논문은 토마스 쿤의 공약불가능성 개념을 신경가소성 이론과 결합하여 재해석함으로써 과학혁명이 어떻게 개인의 인지 구조 차원에서 일어날 수 있는지를 고찰한다. 전통적으로 공약불가능성은 서로 다른 패러다임 간의 언어·개념·방법론적 단절을 가리켰으며, 과학자가 새로운 이론 체계를 이해하기 어려운 이유를 설명하는 핵심 개념으로 제시되어 왔다. 그러나 동시에 이를 절대적 의미로 해석할 경우, 과학혁명은 일종의 비합리적 개종이나 사회적 구성물로만 비춰질 수 있다는 비판 역시 제기됐다. 본 연구는 신경가소성, 즉 성인의 뇌 역시 학습과 경험에 따라 물리적·기능적으로 변화할 수 있다는 원리를 통해 존재론적 공약불가능성이 영구적 불통이라기보다 기존패러다임에 최적화된 신경 회로가 낯선 틀에 적응하는 데 겪는 인지적 간극으로 볼 수 있음을 주장한다. 이러한 관점에서 패러다임 전환은 오랜 시간 축적된 이상현상과 새 이론의 문제 해결 효능을 반복적으로 체험하는 과정에서 과학자 개인의 신경회로가 점진적으로 재편성되는 학습 과정으로 설명 가능하다. 이는 쿤의 혁명적 전환이 심리적·사회적 현상에 그치지 않고, 실제로 신경 차원의 변화가 결합된 자연주의적 과정임을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This paper reinterprets Thomas Kuhn’s concept of incommensurability by integrating it with theories of neuroplasticity, thereby examining how scientific revolutions can unfold at the ontological level of individual cognitive structures. Traditionally, incommensurability has referred to linguistic, conceptual, and methodological discontinuities between paradigms, functioning as a key notion for explaining why scientists may find a new theoretical framework difficult to grasp. Yet when taken in an absolute sense, it has also been criticized for portraying scientific revolutions as irrational conversions or merely socially constructed shifts. Drawing on neuroplasticity—the principle that even the adult brain can undergo physical and functional changes through learning and experience—this study argues that incommensurability at the ontological level is better understood not as a state of permanent communicative breakdown, but as a cognitive gap arising from neural circuits optimized for an established paradigm struggling to adapt to an unfamiliar one. From this perspective, paradigm change can be conceived as a learning process in which accumulated anomalies and repeated encounters with the problem-solving efficacy of a new theory gradually reorganize the scientist’s neural architecture. This suggests that Kuhnian revolutionary transitions are not reducible to psychological or social phenomena alone, but constitute naturalistic processes grounded in neural-level reconfiguration.
