국문 초록

The history of Korea-Vietnam exchange has spanned a long period, with two notable scenes from their premodern interactions serving as motifs for today’s bilateral relationship. The first is cultural exchange via the sea, and the second is human and academic exchange within the East Asian diplomatic order. This study pays particular attention to the process of bilateral exchange through the sea, such as maritime drift and maritime trade. Specifically, it takes as its main texts (1607), which recounts the story of Joseon scholar Jowanbyeok, a war captive taken to Japan during the Imjin War who later participated in Vietnamese trade with a Japanese merchant group; (1621), which similarly features a protagonist involved in Vietnamese trade under comparable circumstances, especially the story of Ok-yeong; and (1687), which details the experiences of Kim Dae-hwang, who drifted to Vietnam and returned to Joseon. In this context, this study utilizes the literary works , , and —which directly reveal scenes of Korea-Vietnam exchange—to explore cooperative content strategies for cities (spaces) linked in these narratives. While these works are rich in content, including encounters with the unfamiliar and experiences of other cultures, their protagonists’ stories have also served as material for various content productions. Although they have generally been introduced through historical documentaries, in recent years they have been widely consumed by the public through theater and musicals. Given that Vietnamese cities such as Hanoi, Xingyuan (Hưng Yên), Hoi An, and Hue are directly or indirectly connected to the content of these texts, there is considerable potential for K-content produced in Korea to expand into V-content, as well as for mutual cooperation in tourism and cultural exchange. Since all three works are representative texts of “exchange through the sea,” they illuminate the cultural characteristics of both countries deeply related to premodern East Asian maritime culture. Above all, this study is significant in that it seeks to identify models for Korea-Vietnam content cooperation today by understanding the patterns of cultural exchange between nations in the premodern era, which often involved recognizing other cultures through “irresistible” or “exceptional experiences.”
