국문 초록

This study analyzes the specific aspects and inherent meanings of transnational class ascension through the migration narratives of characters in the drama Pachinko. The major characters in the work experience cross-border movement and class transition, which are categorized into five types: “elite type,” “high educational mobility type,” “transnational entrepreneur type,” “reproductive mobility type,” and “grounded mobility type.” This study examines how each character’s choices and experiences are formed and frustrated within structural conditions. Koh Hansu exemplifies the elite type, acquiring capital and power while traversing the United States and Japan during the colonial period. Baek Isak is depicted as a high educational mobility type who seeks ascension through Christian missions and education but whose life is interrupted by state violence. Mozasu is portrayed as a transnational entrepreneur type who achieves economic independence through the pachinko industry. Noah represents the reproductive mobility type, attempting identification through education but ultimately ending his life due to the limits of ethnic identity. Solomon follows the path of a global elite but reveals the limitations of the grounded mobility type as he faces barriers within Japanese society. This study especially highlights that the mobility and ascension of these characters are not the results of individual choices alone but are formed within complex structures of imperial legacy, ethnic and class boundaries, and overlapping legal and social inequalities.
