Musical, as an art form originated from the West, gradually came into the Chinese view since the 1980s. Due to its relatively short development time in China, its progress has mainly been influenced by factors such as cultural differences, political environment and audience acceptance. Chinese original musicals have emerged on the basis of national operas. Over the years, many classic national operas have emerged in China, such as “The White-Haired Girl”, “Jiang Jie”, “The Red Detachment of Women”, and “Liu Hulan”, most of which take heroic deeds as the core creative material and promote the spirit of justice by shaping female heroic figures. Based on the cultural interpretation of the large-scale scene symphony musical “The Mulan Poems”, this article deeply analyzes the character shaping and female image traits of Mulan in the play. In a male-dominated social structure, Mulan subverts the traditional concept of “men being superior to women” and substantially challenges people’s stereotypical perception of gender symbols. This article studies the shaping of female characters in Chinese historical musicals from three aspects: the formation of female roles in Chinese and Western cultures, the creative reasons for “The Mulan Poems”, and the artistic characteristics of the Mulan character image. It focuses on analyzing the rich and three-dimensional artistic traits of the historical figure Mulan and elaborately interprets her artistic presentation from the dimensions of vocal performance and dramatic performance. The legendary life of Mulan endows contemporary women with the spiritual core of independence and autonomy, allowing Western audiences to deeply appreciate the artistic value of Chinese civilization that spans five thousand years when enjoying Chinese art works.
