작가 주도형 출판 활동의 유형 분석 : 일제강점기(1910~1945) 문학 도서를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 연구는 일제강점기 문학 분야에서 자가출판이나 독립출판 등의 ‘작가 주도형 출판’이 뚜렷하게 등장하였던 현상과 사례를 분석하였다. 문학도서 441종의 표지와 판권지를 분석하여 작가 주도형 출판물 123종을 선별하였다. 전체의 27.9%를 차지하는 이들 도서는 ‘서점 판매를 염두에 두지 않은 자가출판’, ‘서점 판매를 고려한 자가출판’, ‘출판사를 설립하여 자신의 책을 출판하는 경우’, ‘작가들의 사회적 활동 단체가 책을 출판하는 경우’, ‘작가가 발행인으로서의 역할을 담당하는 경우’의 유형으로 구분된다. 이 현상은 자본만 있으면 누구나 출판할 수 있는 기술적 환경에서, 출판이 작가의 중요한 활동으로 자리잡았지만, 이윤을 추구하는 출판사들이 잘 팔리지 않는 책의 출판을 기피하는 갈등적 상황에서 비롯되었다. 이 상황을 극복하기 위해 작가들은 직접 출판허가를 얻을 수 있는 출판법 조항을 활용하여 다양한 작가 주도형 출판을 시도하였으며, 문학출판의 주요한 흐름을 형성한 것으로 분석된다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the phenomenon and cases of “author-led publishing,” such as self-publishing and independent publishing, that emerged prominently in the literary field during the Japanese colonial period. The covers and copyrights of 441 literary publications were analyzed to identify 123 author-led publications. These books, which accounted for 27.9% of the total, can be categorized into three types: “self-publishing not intended for bookstore sales,” “self-publishing with bookstore sales in mind,” “publishing one's own books through the establishment of a publishing company,” “publishing by social activist groups of writers,” and “authors acting as both authors and publishers.” This phenomenon stemmed from a conflictual environment where publishing was established as a crucial activity for writers in a technological environment where anyone with capital could publish, yet profit-driven publishers avoided publishing books that sold poorly. In this context, authors exploited provisions in the Publication Act that allowed them to obtain publishing permits directly, attempting various author-led publishing initiatives, which ultimately shaped the literary publishing landscape.
