The Sage Transmits His Mandate”: A Study on the Concept of “Mandate” in Wang Anshi's Yijing Thought

Wang Anshi expounded his basic concepts of political order construction through his commentary on the Zhouyi. In the “The Yi jie 易解（Interpretation of the Yi）”, Wang Anshi, through the positioning of the saint's identity, puts the “way of the saint” into the process of “passing on heaven mandate destiny by praising it”, i.e., he believes that the formation of the Zhouyi carries the “way of the saint”, and that the saint made the Yi to pass on the“destiny”of heaven to the people. He believed that the formation of the Zhouyi scripture itself carried the“Way of the Sage”, and that the Sage made the Yi to transmit the “destiny” of the gods of heaven to the people, and he further combined his understanding of destiny with the construction of the political order, proposing that the Sage's “way of the saint” be integrated with the construction of the political order. He further combined his knowledge of destiny with the construction of political order, and put forward the assertion of “knowing destiny”, which implies that the sage let the people know their destiny, and also means that “the way of the sage” should be corrected. It also means that the “Way of the Sage” is supposed to correct the real political order. The “Way of the Sage” then plays a role in the relationship between ruler and ministers, the core of political order construction, and Wang Anshi, through his interpretation of the Zhouyi, puts his discussion of“fate”into practice in the relationship between ruler and ministers. He believed that a wise ruler and a virtuous prime minister were the optimal solution for the formation of a stable and sustainable political order, but this solution was rare, so he proposed that subjects assisting the monarch in pursuing the “ Way of the Sage ” would be the way of “knowing one's destiny,” and that if the monarch was unable to learn and uphold the “Way of the Sage,” the monarch should be able to realize his destiny by pursuing the “Way of the Sage”as well. If the monarch could not learn and uphold the“Way of the Sage”, then he could “change his will” and revolutionize. In this way, Wang Anshi provided a solid theoretical foundation for his Xining 熙宁revolution by interpreting the Zhouyi.

영문 초록

王安石通过注解《周易》经传阐发自身对政治秩序建构设想的基本理念，在《易解》中，王安石通过对圣人身份的定位，将“圣人之道”贯穿于“幽有以赞之而传其命”的过程中，即其认为《周易》经传的形成本身就承载着“圣人之道”，圣人作《易》就是要向百姓传天地神明之“命”，进一步将其对“命”的认识与政治秩序构建相结合，提出“知命”的论断，“知命”既意味着圣人让百姓“知命”，又代表“圣人之道”理应匡正现实的政治秩序。进而“圣人之道”对政治秩序建构的核心——君臣关系，产生作用，王安石借助诠释《周易》，将其对“命”的论述落实到君臣关系上，其认为明君贤相是组建稳定且可持续的政治秩序的最优解，但这一方案实属难得，所以其提出臣子辅助君主以追求“圣人之道”为“知命”，如若君主无法学习并秉持“圣人之道”，那么可以“变志”革命。由此，王安石通过解《周易》为其熙宁变法提供了坚实的理论基础。
