Purpose: This study aims to analyze the current malaria control policies in South Korea and suggest effective improvements by comparing them with successful malaria elimination strategies from other countries, amid a resurgence in domestic cases.
Methods: A literature review and policy document analysis were conducted to examine Korea’s surveillance, vector control, and patient management systems. These were compared with the malaria elimination strategies employed in China, Algeria, and Cabo Verde to identify strengths, limitations, and areas for improvement.
Results: South Korea has implemented various institutional efforts, including transitioning to active surveillance, expanding mosquito monitoring networks, and targeting high-risk groups. However, challenges remain in areas such as proactive adaptation to climate change, imported case management, integration of military and civilian health efforts in border regions, community-based public health capacity, and public awareness. In contrast, countries that successfully eliminated malaria adopted early detection systems, rapid response protocols, robust border surveillance, and community-engaged prevention approaches.
Conclusion: To eliminate malaria, South Korea must address existing policy gaps and adopt a comprehensive, integrated strategy aligned with international best practices. Nationally, this involves enhancing climate-adaptive vector control, strengthening border screening, and deepening international partnerships. Locally, it requires reinforcing health education, employing innovative vector control technologies, and promoting community engagement. These combined efforts are essential to achieve the national malaria elimination goal by 2030 and improve overall public health resilience.
