필립 K. 딕의 『스캐너 다클리』는 1970년대 미국 사회의 정치·사회적 맥락 속에서 마약 중독, 정부 감시, 정체성 붕괴라는 세 가지 주제를 교차적으로 탐구하는 작품이다. 가상의 약물 ‘물질 D(Substance D)’로 인해 황폐화된 근미래 캘리포니아를 배경으로, 이 소설은 마약 수사국의 잠입 요원이자 동시에 중독자인 로버트 아크터(Robert Arctor)의 심리적·존재론적 붕괴 과정을 중심으로 서사를 전개한다. 특히, 딕은 마약 중독과 감시라는 이중의 압력 속에서 자아가 서서히 해체되는 아크터의 경험을 통해, 닉슨 행정부의 “마약과의 전쟁(War on Drugs)” 시기 미국 정부의 중독에 대한 처벌 중심적 접근을 비판적으로 조명한다. 본 연구는 『스캐너 다클리』가 중독을 단순한 개인의 도덕적 실패가 아닌, 체계적이고 사회적으로 구성된 조건으로 재현하며, 그것이 어떻게 개인 주체성을 해체하는지를 분석하는 데 목적을 둔다. 문학적 및 사회학적 이론을 바탕으로, 이 작품이 감시와 국가 권력이 어떻게 탈인간화 및 자기 소외의 기제로 작동하는지를 고찰한다. 기존의 해외 연구는 디스토피아적·편집증적·심리학적 관점에서 본 작품을 활발히 논의해 왔으나, 국내 문학비평 담론에서는 아직 충분한 비평적 접근이 이루어지지 않았다. 이에 본 연구는 이와 같은 학문적 공백을 보완하고, 『스캐너 다클리』의 문학적 의미와 현대 사회에 대한 지속적인 비판적 함의를 재조명하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Philip K. Dick’s A Scanner Darkly explores the intersection of drug addiction, government surveillance, and identity fragmentation within the socio-political context of 1970s America. Set in a near-future California ravaged by a fictional substance known as “Substance D” (or “Slow Death”), the novel depicts the psychological and existential deterioration of Robert Arctor, an undercover narcotics agent who becomes both the observer and the observed. Through Arctor’s gradual collapse of identity—exacerbated by the dual pressures of drug dependency and institutional monitoring—Dick critiques the U.S. government’s punitive approach to addiction, particularly during the era of Nixon’s “War on Drugs.” This study aims to analyze how A Scanner Darkly portrays addiction not merely as a personal failing, but as a systemic and socially constructed condition that dismantles individual subjectivity. Drawing on literary and sociological frameworks, the research investigates how surveillance and state control operate as mechanisms of dehumanization and self-alienation. While numerous international studies have examined the novel through dystopian, paranoid, and psychological lenses, critical engagement within Korean literary discourse remains limited. By addressing this scholarly gap, the study re-evaluates the novel’s literary significance and its enduring relevance to contemporary debates on addiction, state power, and the crisis of identity.
