국문 초록

이 논문은 백석의 사슴 시집에 나타난 제임스 조이스 문학의 수용 양상을 살피고, 그것의 문학사적 의의를 밝히는 목적으로 하였다. 백석의 조이스 문학 수용 배경과 특징을 고찰하기 위해 본 논문은 당대 문학 장에서 조이스 문학의 함의를 고찰하였다. 1934년 백석이 중역한 미르스키의 논문 ｢｢죠이쓰｣와 愛蘭文學｣에는 식민지 아일랜드 문학의 정체성을 보여주는 조이스의 문학적 특징이 집중적으로 조명되었다. 미르스키는 더블린의 현실에서 소재와 주제를 탐구했던 조이스의 중요한 특질로 정확한 언어로 구사된 사실적 묘사를 주목하면서 조이스의 세계주의를 고평하였다. 이 밖에도 백석과 긴밀하게 교류했던 김기림과 백철의 조이스 문학에 대한 인식도 백석의 조이스 문학 수용에 중요한 토대를 마련하였다. 김기림은 조이스의 세계주의가 보여준 문학적 가능성과 한계를 비판적으로 인식하면서 민족주의와 세계주의가 통합된 조선의 민족문학을 탐색했으며, 백철은 리얼리티의 재현 방법론으로서 조이스의 묘사적 문체에 주목하였다. 이러한 조이스 문학 담론 을 기반으로 백석은 세계문학의 성취와 리얼리티의 재현 방법론으로서 조이스의 사실적 묘사를 주시하면서 리얼리즘과 모더니즘, 카프와 비카프로 양분된 1930년대 중반 조선 문단의 난제를 해결할 수 있는 방향성을 모색할 수 있었다. 백석은 사슴 시집에서 객관 적이고 중립적인 태도로 식민지 더블린과 더블린 사람들의 삶을 사실적으로 묘사하는 조이스의 창작 방법을 수용하여, 평온했던 유년 시절의 풍속을 근대적으로 재현하였다. 이를 통해 백석은 독자들이 식민지의 상황에서 풍속에 내재된 민족적 함의를 발견할 수 있도록 유도하였다. 조이스가 아일랜드 문예부흥류의 작가들이 모색했던 민족주의를 전면 부정하면서 암울한 더블린의 현실을 재현하는 세계주의로 나아갔다면, 백석은 민족적 정체성을 담보한 유년 시절의 풍속을 근대적으로 재현함으로써 민족주의와 세계주의를 포섭하였다. 그 결과, 백석은 민족주의가 매개하는 식민지 문학의 특수성과 세계주의가 지향하는 세계문학의 보편성을 확보한 창작 방법을 구현할 수 있었다. 백석 시에 나타난 제임스 조이스 문학의 수용 양상은 단순한 영향 관계를 넘어 백석이 역사적 · 문학적 맥락 속에서 조이스 문학을 주체적으로 수용하여, 독창적인 시 세계를 창출하는 역동적 과정을 보여준다는 점에서 문학사적 의의가 발견된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the acceptance patterns of James Joyce literature in Baek seok's Deer poetry collection and to clarify its literary historical significance. In order to examine the background and characteristics of Baek seok's acceptance of Joyce literature, this thesis examined the implications of Joyce literature in the contemporary literary field. D. S. Mirsky's thesis “Joyce and Irish Literature”, retranslated by Baek seok in 1934, focused on Joyce's literary characteristics that showed the identity of colonial Irish literature. D. S. Mirsky praised Joyce's cosmopolitanism, noting his realistic description in accurate language as an important trait of Joyce, who explored material and subject matter in Dublin's reality. In addition, Kim Ki-rim and Baek Cheol's perception of Joyce literature, which closely interacted with Baek seok, laid an important foundation for Baek seok's acceptance of Joyce literature. Kim Ki-rim explored Joseon's national literature, which integrated nationalism and cosmopolitanism, critically recognizing the literary possibilities and limitations of Joyce's cosmopolitanism, and Baek Cheol paid attention to Joyce's descriptive style as a method of representing reality. Based on discourse about Joyce' s literature, Baek Seok was able to seek a direction to resolve the difficulties of the Joseon literary world in the mid-1930s, which was divided into realism and modernism, KAPF and non-KAPF, while paying attention to Joyce's realistic description as an achievement of world literature and a methodology for representing reality. By accepting Joyce's creative method of depicting colony Dublin and the lives of the people of Dublin realistically in an objective and neutral attitude in the Deer poetry collection, Baek seok modernly represented the customs of his peaceful childhood. Through this, Baek seok induced readers to discover ethnic implications inherent in customs in the colonial situation. While Joyce completely denied nationalism sought by Irish literary revivalists and moved to cosmopolitanism that represented the grim reality of Dublin, Baek seok integrated nationalism and cosmopolitanism based on creative methods that modernly represented the customs of childhood that secured ethnic identity. As a result, Baek seok was able to realize a creative method that secured the specificity of colonial literature mediated by nationalism and the universality of world literature aimed at by cosmopolitanism. The pattern of acceptance of James Joyce's literature shown in Baek seok's poetry goes beyond a simple relationship of influence and is significant in literary history in that it shows the dynamic process in which Baek seok independently accepts Joyce's literature within a historical and literary context and creates a unique poetic world.
