국문 초록

본 연구는 중동 지역에서 정치적 정당성을 확보하기 위한 전략으로 세속주의와 이슬람주의가 어떻게 정치적으로 도구화되어 왔는가에 대해 분석한다. 특히 튀르키예를 중심으로, 아타튀르크의 케말주의 이데올로기를 통한 엄격한 세속주의의 제도화에서 정의개발당(AKP)과 에르도안 대통령 하의 정치 이슬람 부상까지 튀르키예 정치적 정체성의 역사적 변천을 고찰한다. 정치적 정당성과 정체성 형성 이론에 기반하여, 본 연구는 이슬람이 종교적 영역을 넘어 대중 동원과 정권 공고화의 수단으로 작용했음을 밝힌다. 에르도안의 온건 이슬람주의에서 이슬람 포퓰리즘으로의 이념적 전환은 이슬람 가치를 전략적으로 활용하여 대중적 지지를 구축하고, 국가 정체성을 재구성하며, 권위주의적 통치를 정당화하는 과정을 거쳤다. 이를 통해 종교 정체성이 현대 정치에서 통합과 분열을 동시에 불러오는 양가적 역할을 수행하고 있음을 본 논문은 조명하고자 한다. 튀르키예 사례는 종교, 민족주의, 권위주의 간의 상호작용을 이해하는 데 학문적 시사점을 제공한다.

영문 초록

This study critically examines the instrumentalization of secularism and Islamism as competing strategies for securing political legitimacy in the Middle East, with particular emphasis on the Turkish case. It traces the historical evolution of Turkey’s political identity from the rigid secularism institutionalized through Atatürk’s Kemalist ideology to the ascendance of political Islam under the leadership of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Framed within theoretical perspectives on political legitimacy and identity formation, the analysis elucidates how Islam has functioned not only as a religious framework but also as a vehicle for populist mobilization and regime consolidation. The study argues that Erdoğan’s ideological shift—from moderate Islamism to Islamic populism—entailed the strategic appropriation of Islamic values to cultivate mass appeal, reconfigure national identity, and legitimize increasingly authoritarian rule. By mapping this ideological transformation, the article sheds light on the dual role of religious identity as both a cohesive and divisive force in contemporary politics. The Turkish experience, in this regard, offers critical insights into the broader nexus between religion, nationalism, and authoritarianism across the Middle East.
