본 연구는 K대학 평생교육원에서 실시한 신중년 세대를 위한 환경인문학 프로그램을 사례로 하여, 해당 프로그램의 기획 의도와 구조적 특징을 분석하고, 신중년 학습자들의 교육 참여 경험과 그로 인한 성장을 해석하고자 한다. 이를 토대로 신중년 평생학습의 새로운 가능성을 모색하고, 환경인문학 교육의 의미와 시사점을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 질적 사례연구를 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 신중년 환경인문학 프로그램은 지역 및 신중년 세대의 특성을 반영하여 기획되었고, 자연, 지역, 기후변화, 좋은 삶을 주제로 신중년의 삶과 환경을 연결하는 방식으로 세부 내용이 구성되었으며, 학습자의 ‘경험, 성찰 및 의미 발견, 실천’의 관계를 고려하여 학습자의 내면적 변화와 사회적 실천 참여를 동시에 지향하는 프로그램으로 설계되었음을 확인하였다. 교육에 참여한 학습자들은 성장 경험이 비교적 유사한 동년배와 학습하며 환경인문학의 주요 학습 내용에 깊게 공감하였고, 활동 및 토론 중심의 참여식 수업을 접하며 활발한 배움의 과정을 경험하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 학습 주도성과 자기 효능감을 높이는 경험을 하였던 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 환경이라는 사회적 의제와 관련된 인문학 강의를 통해 내가 살고 있는 지역사회의 환경에 관한 관심을 높이고 관련 지식을 습득하며, 삶 속에서의 실천에 관한 고민을 확장하는 계기를 마련했던 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 학습 경험은 궁극적으로 참여자 자신의 삶에서 의미와 보람을 찾고, 삶의 지평을 넓히는데 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 신중년을 대상으로 한 그간의 연구들이 직업교육 및 경력전환 경험에 집중해온 것과 달리, 신중년을 위한 인문학 교육의 의미와 가치를 조명했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the planning intentions and structural characteristics of an environmental humanities education program designed for middle-aged adults at the Lifelong Education Center of K University, and to interpret the learning experiences of its participants. A qualitative case study was conducted for this purpose. The analysis revealed that the program was planned in consideration of both regional contexts and the unique characteristics of the middle-aged generation. The program content was organized around themes such as nature, community, climate change, and the good life, linking environmental issues with the participants’ own lives. It was designed to foster both internal transformation and active social engagement by emphasizing the interrelation of experience, reflection, meaning-making, and practice. Participants expressed strong empathy with the core themes of environmental humanities as they learned alongside peers with similar life experiences. Through activity- and discussion-based participatory sessions, they experienced active and engaging learning processes, which in turn enhanced their learning initiative and self-efficacy. In particular, the humanities-based lectures on environmental issues increased their awareness of environmental challenges in their own communities, expanded their knowledge, and deepened their reflection on practical action in daily life. These learning experiences ultimately helped participants discover meaning and fulfillment in their lives and to broaden their perspectives. This study is meaningful in that it shifts the focus from the traditional emphasis on vocational education and career transition for middle-aged adults, to illuminating the value and significance of humanities education for this demographic. Based on these findings, implications for future research and lifelong education practices were discussed.
