국문 초록
Skeletal muscle atrophy is comorbid to a number of pathologies and other conditions
including cancer, disuse and aging. Atrophy is associated with reduced quality of life and
increased mortality, yet effective therapeutic approaches are lacking. Mechanisms of
atrophy are known to be highly heterogeneous across stimuli with the primary conserved
similarity being the development of a negative protein balance (protein degradation
exceeding protein synthesis). In recent years divergence of atrophic mechanisms between
biological sexes is starting to become better recognized. This sexual dimorphism is
currently poorly understood but also critical to development of efficacious therapies to
prevent, attenuate or reverse atrophy. The purpose of this mini-review is to explore the
heterogeneity of the onset of muscle atrophy with specific consideration of biological
sex. This is not intended to be a fully encompassing consideration but rather a primer to
heterogeneity of muscle atrophy across biological sexes in the onset of atrophy.
