국문 초록
This paper aims to compare the foreign language education theories reflected in John Locke’s Some Thoughts Concerning Education and Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Emile, focusing on the use of picture books and fables, and to consider the significance of visual materials and storytelling from the perspective of 21st-century English education. Locke emphasizes the educational benefits of teaching aids and stories that stimulate the five senses of young learners, immersing oneself in stories like Aesop’s fables by fully engaging the senses enables effective acquisition of language and content. In contrast, Rousseau believes that the younger the child, the more they should experience the essence of things directly and learn independently, expressing concern that learning mediated by teaching aids, including books, may implant incorrect concepts in the mind. The metaphorical nature of stories, he warns, can lead to misinterpretations that confuse and mislead learners, much like how crime prevention education can inadvertently guide imitation crimes. While Locke focuses on systematic teaching methods that overcome the cognitive and language development levels of learners and the limitations of direct experience, Rousseau cautions against the misuse of unverified and poor-quality educational materials and emphasizes learner autonomy.
