국문 초록

This qualitative study explores the actual experiences of Korean university students who have engaged in self-directed English learning (SDEL), with a focus on the challenges they face and their strategies for overcoming them. This study collected data through semi-structured interviews with nine students who had recently attempted self-directed English learning activities. Using Colaizzi’s (1978) analytical framework, three major themes were identified: psychological and emotional barriers to self-directed learning, difficulties in implementing strategic learning behaviors, and effective coping strategies and support factors. Collaborative peer learning, incremental goal-setting, and instructor feedback were found to facilitate sustained engagement. The findings suggest that effective SDEL requires not only individual effort but also institutional and interpersonal support. Based on the results, this study offers pedagogical implications for enhancing SDEL practices in university English education and highlights the need for a supportive learning environment that fosters both autonomy and emotional stability.
