The Cost of Instability: A Political Economy Analysis of Pakistan’s 2024 Challenges and CPEC’s Contingency Value for South Asia

In 2024, Pakistan experienced a significant escalation in internal security challenges, marked by a surge in terrorist activities, ethnic separatist violence, and sectarian conflicts. Drawing on extensive statistical data and qualitative analysis, this study examines the patterns, regional distribution, and typology of violent incidents in Pakistan throughout the year. The findings reveal that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces remain the most affected regions, with civilians and security personnel suffering the highest casualties. The implications of this internal instability extend beyond Pakistan’s borders, threatening regional stability in South Asia by intensifying Indo-Pakistani tensions, exacerbating Afghanistan's security challenges, and undermining economic integration initiatives like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. This study concludes that Pakistan’s security crisis is not an isolated phenomenon but a significant factor influencing South Asia's geopolitical landscape, necessitating comprehensive national reforms and enhanced regional cooperation to mitigate broader destabilization risks.
