This essay examines the symbolic resonance of bones in W. B. Yeats’s legacy and Maylis Besserie’s Scattered Love, where the poet’s ghost reflects on the enduring themes of his life, art, and the enigmatic fate of his mortal remains. The motif of bones functions as a narrative and metaphorical axis, encapsulating the intersections of love, mortality, and memory. Through this lens, the essay explores how Besserie reimagines Yeats’s reflections on unfulfilled passion—particularly his love for Maud Gonne—while interrogating the broader cultural and historical dimensions of his identity. The controversies surrounding the exhumation and reburial of Yeats’s remains deepen the tension between artistic immortality and the transience of the physical body, echoing Ireland’s complex and often fractured historical narrative. By placing Yeats within a contemporary literary framework, Besserie simultaneously extends and transforms his vision, embedding his meditations on love, loss, and legacy within a modern context. The essay contends that Besserie’s novel elevates bones as a vessel of memory, forging a bridge between Yeats’s poetic imagination and her own reinterpretation. Ultimately, this exploration highlights the enduring relevance of their shared engagement with mortality, history, and the transcendent power of art and emotion.
