국문 초록

동상은 돌이나 청동 등으로 제작된 역사 인물의 형상으로, 기념물의 일종이다. 이 글에서는 동상 철거 논쟁이 역사교재로 다뤄져야 하는 이유와 그 구체적 방안을 연구한다. 필자는 동상 철거 논쟁을 통해 다양한 집단 간의 내러티브가 경합하고 충돌하는 양상을 역사교재화 할 수 있다고 주장한다. 특히, 지역 사회의 거버넌스를 기반으로 민주적인 의사 결정 과정을 거쳐 갈등을 해소하는 방식에 주목한다. 이때 공공역사는 동상 철거 논쟁을 설명하는 이론적 토대가 된다. 2020년 미국 경찰의 과잉 진압으로 조지 플로이드(George Floyd)가 사망한 이후 BLM(Black Lives Matter, ‘흑인의 생명도 소중하다’)운동이 전 세계로 확산되었다. 이 운동으로 (재)점화된 동상 철거 논쟁이 주된 논의 대상이다. 해당 논쟁은 인종주의, 식민주의, 이주와 다문화 등과 관련된다. 이는 집단 간의 기억 및 감정이 복잡하게 얽힌 민감하고 논쟁적인 문제이다. 동상 철거 논쟁은 과거의 역사 인물에 대한 평가처럼 보이지만, 실제는 공동체가 미래 세대에게 무엇을 기억하게 할지의 문제이자, 동시에 현재 사회의 모순과 불평등 구조를 반영하는 문제이다. 이 글은 동상 철거 논쟁을 교재화해야 할 필요성 및 유용성을 말한다. 논쟁성을 교재 구성의 원리로 삼은 학습 프레임워크와 이에 맞는 구체적 수업 사례도 함께 소개한다.

영문 초록

A statue is a type of monument that depicts a historical figure, typically made of stone or bronze. This article explores the potential of incorporating the statue removal controversy into history education. The author argues that studying this controversy can help students understand how different groups construct competing and conflicting narratives. Additionally, it examines how conflicts can be resolved through democratic decision-making processes within community governance. In this context, public history serves as the theoretical foundation for explaining the significance of the statue removal controversy in history education. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement gained global momentum following the death of George Floyd in 2020 due to excessive police force. This movement reignited debates over the removal of statues, making it a central topic of discussion. The controversy is deeply connected to issues of racism, decolonization, migration, and multiculturalism, often sparking intense debates due to the complex and emotionally charged memories associated with historical figures. At first glance, the statue removal controversy may seem like a debate over the legacy of historical figures. However, at its core, it raises broader questions about what societies choose to remember and pass on to future generations. At the same time, it reflects the structural contradictions and inequalities present in contemporary society. This article discusses the necessity and benefits of integrating the statue removal controversy into history education. It also presents a learning framework that incorporates controversy as a key pedagogical principle and provides specific lesson examples that align with this framework.
