국문 초록

본 연구는 도시 골목이 단순한 보행 경로가 아니라 정동적·서사적 공간으로 기능할 가능성을 탐색한다. 이를 위해 호돌로지 이론과 체화된 서사 개념을 적용하여, 보행자의 이동 경로와 감각적 경험이 공간적 의미를 형성하는 방식을 분석한다. 또한, 공공예술의 한 형태로 사운드 아트와 퍼포먼스 아트가 골목에서 구현될 때, 보행자가 공간을 감각적으로 경험하고 서사를 창출하는 과정을 연구한다. 본 연구는 자넷 카드프, 크리스티안 볼탕스키, 빌 폰타나의 대표적 사례를 분석하고, 서울 익선동·성수동, 도쿄 야나카 긴자, 런던 브릭 레인의 골목 공간을 자문화기술지 방법을 통해 조사하였다. 또한, 공공예술 프로젝트가 골목에서 보행자의 심리적·정동적 반응을 어떻게 유도하는지 정성적으로 분석하였다. 이에 대한 결과로써, 골목은 보행자의 정동적·서사적 경험을 통해 의미가 변주되며, 공공예술을 활용한 개입이 골목 공간을 지속 가능한 문화적 장소로 전환할 가능성을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 골목 공간이 단순한 도시 기반시설이 아닌 감각적·정서적·서사적 무대로 기능할 수 있음을 논증하며, 공공예술과 도시 공간 연구의 접점을 확장하는 데 기여한다. 나아가, 젠트리피케이션과 과잉관광 문제 속에서 골목 공간이 예술적 실천을 통해 지속 가능한 도시 문화의 장으로 기능할 가능성을 제안한다.

영문 초록

This study explores how urban alleys function not merely as pedestrian pathways but as affective and narrative spaces. By applying hodology and embodied narrative theories, this study analyzes how pedestrian movement and sensory experiences construct spatial meanings. Furthermore, it investigates how sound art and performance art transform alleys into immersive narrative environments, where pedestrians actively engage with their surroundings. This research examines the works of Janet Cardiff, Christian Boltanski, and Bill Fontana and conducts an Autoethnographic study of alleys in Ikseon-dong and Seongsu-dong (Seoul), Yanaka Ginza (Tokyo), and Brick Lane (London). Additionally, it empirically assesses how public art projects in alleys influence pedestrians’ psychological and affective responses. As a result, it confirms that alleys undergo meaning variations through pedestrians’ affective and narrative experiences, and that artistic interventions can facilitate the transformation of alley spaces into sustainable cultural sites. This study argues that alleys serve as sensory, emotional, and narrative-driven urban stages, expanding the intersection of public art and urban spatial studies. Furthermore, it highlights the role of artistic interventions in mitigating gentrification and overtourism, proposing that public art can foster sustainable cultural spaces in contemporary urban settings.
