국문 초록

이 글은 W. B. 예이츠가 만난 일본 문화와 그가 수용한 일본의 노와 선불교 사상의 관점에서 그의 후기 시를 분석하는 데 그 일차적 목적이 있다. 예이츠는 일찍부터 신비주의적이고 심령적인 정신세계에 관심을 가졌었다. 가령, 그가 스웨덴의 신비주의자 스베덴보리에 매료되었던 것도 이러한 맥락에서 이해가 가능하다. 또 일본 문화에 관심을 가졌던 것은 페넬로사와 파운드의 번역 등을 통해서 이루어졌고, 이러한 체험은 그의 창작에도 적지 않은 영향을 주었다. 예이츠가 추구하는 화합과 일치, 선적 경지에 대한 섬밀한 묘사는 일본 문화에서 취합한 것이라는 것을 추론하는 것은 어렵지 않다. 특히 그가 매료되었던 일본의 노와 선불교는 예이츠가 추구했던 정신세계의 구축에 상당 부분 기여했다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This essay seeks to examine in W. B. Yeats’s later poetry the elements of Zen Buddhism and Noh, the products of Japanese spiritual thought. Japonism was popular in the early 20th century in the London literary circle. Ernest Fenellosa and Ezra Pound introduced Japanese religio-spiritual thoughts and literary genres to England. Yeats was deeply influenced by the manifestations of the indigenous religiosity in Japan such as Noh and Zen Buddhism, some elements of which came close to what Yeats was after. His spiritual-literary propensity must have led him to accept and adopt those very imported spiritual products. It is not that difficult to read in Yeats’s later poetry a mixture of western mystical thought and Japanese cultural aspects.
