국문 초록

「재림」이 시 자체의 텍스트와 거리를 두게 하는 원인은 이 시가 새로운 문맥과 새로운 사건들을 수용할 수 있는 데에 기인한다. 이 시의 힘은 단순히 하나의 문학 텍스트라는 지위에서 나온다. 그러나 평론가들은 그 시의 힘이 내재적인 것인지 아니면 그 시가 자처하는 종교적 전통에서 비롯된 것인지 확신하지 못한다. 「재림」이 특이한 문학적 사건으로 두드러지게 보이는 것은, 그 시가 문학적, 정치적, 그리고 계시적 디스코스를 혼재하게 만드는 정도 때문인 것 같은데, 그 정도가 심해서 서로를 구분하기 어렵게 한다. 이런 것이 이 시를 사건 자체가 되게 한다.

영문 초록

The way in which “The Second Coming” detaches itself from its own immediate context is what enables it to embrace new contexts, new events. “The Second Coming”’s power simply stems from its status as a literary text. But critics are unsure whether the poem’s forcefulness is intrinsic or borrowed from a religious tradition with which it affiliates itself. What seems to mark off “The Second Coming” as a singular literary event is the degree to which it interweaves literary, political, and apocalyptical discourses, to the point where it is hard to distinguish them from one another. This is what makes this poem a singular event in itself.
