국문 초록

“앵거스 그레이” 이야기들이 확인하는 바는 그레고리 여사가 쿨 장원 주변의 “고대 민속시와 민속”의 가치를 인식하기 시작했었고, 그녀가 1893년 경 처음으로 더글러스 하이드와 예이츠를 읽기 전에, 예이츠가 나중에 그녀를 “문학의 큰 발견”으로 부르게 되는 문체를 보이고 있었다는 사실이다. 그녀가 예이츠나 더글러스 하이드를 만나기 5년 전에 쓰여 지고 작가로 인정받기 훨씬 이전에 쓰여 진 “앵거스 그레이”[그레고리여사가 썼던 필명] 이야기들에서는, 그녀는 자신의 1883년 자서전에서 한 대부분의 약속을 성취할 수 있었고, 그녀의 후기 작품에 필수적인 주제의 발견에 훨씬 가까이 다가가 있었다. 이 작품들은 그녀가 처음으로 성취한 아일랜드의 문학적 업적이 되는 것이다.

영문 초록

The “Angus Grey” stories confirm that Gregory had begun to realize the value of the “folk learning [and] folk poetry of ancient tradition” around her at Coole, and was already developing the idiomatic style Yeats was to call her “great discovery in literature” significantly before she first read the work of Douglas Hyde and Yeats around 1893. In the “Angus Grey” stories, composed a half-decade before she was to meet Yeats or Douglas Hyde, and long before her acknowledged emergence as a writer, she was able to realize much of the incomplete promise of her 1883 memoir, and came significantly closer to discovering the subject-matter essential to her later career. They constitute her first fully accomplished Irish writing.
