중동 석유의 정치적 역할에 대한 재고찰: 중동과 미국 관계를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 냉전 시대부터 현재까지 미국 외교 정책을 형성하는 데 있어 중동 석유가 어떠한 역할을 했는지 중점적으로 고찰하였다. 특히, 에너지 안보가 사우디아라비아와 이란과 같은 중동의 주요 산유국들과 우호적 관계 구축을 비롯하여 지정학적 전략 구축에 어떻게 영향을 주었는지 살펴보았다. 자원 저주 이론과 지대 추구 이론 등을 기반으로 석유 자원의 정치 및 경제 역학 관계를 분석하여 석유 자원이 중동 국내외 정치 구조에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지 중점적으로 분석하였다. 1970년대의 오일 쇼크, 걸프전, 9·11 테러 이후의 상황 등 주요 역사적 사건들을 살펴봄으로써 중동 석유 자원 통제라는 명분이 미국의 대중동 정책 구축에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지 분석하였다. 이를 통해 중동 석유 자원의 정치적 의미에 대해 재고찰할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study focused on examining the role of Middle Eastern oil in shaping U.S. foreign policy from the Cold War era to the present. In particular, it explored how energy security influenced the establishment of favorable relations with major oil-producing countries in the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia and Iran, and contributed to the development of geopolitical strategies. Based on theories like the resource curse and rent-seeking, the analysis delved into the political and economic dynamics of oil resources and their impact on domestic and international political structures in the Middle East. By reviewing major historical events such as the oil shocks of the 1970s, the Gulf Wars, and the post-9/11 era, the study analyzed how the justification of controlling Middle Eastern oil resources influenced U.S. Middle East policy. Through this analysis, this study contributes to reevaluating the political significance of Middle Eastern oil resources.
