국문 초록

김나지움은 오늘날까지 독일 교육체제의 중추를 이루고 있다. 그 학교에서 근무하며 그것을 지탱하는 교사들 역시 남다른 엘리트 의식을 지니고 있다. 그러나 이러한 의식은 다른 유형의 학교들에서 일하는 교사들과의 차이점을 강조하고, 기존 교육제도를 유지하는데 집착하는 모습으로 나타났다. 다양한 연구들에서 김나지움 교사집단의 보수성을 지적하는 내용을 접할 수 있다. 다만 대부분이 학교제도, 교수법, 교원양성 등의 문제를 핵심 주제로 삼고 있기에 그 집단에 대해서 총체적으로 깊이 분석한 연구들은 많지 않다. 본 연구는 역사적인 관점에서 독일 김나지움 교사집단의 의식이 어떻게 주조되고 발전되었는지는 짚어보고, 그것이 어떻게 특유의 보수성으로 응결되어 사회적으로 작동하였는지를 밝혀보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 19세기에 형성된 김나지움 교사의 지위, 신분 그리고 의식을 살펴보고, 그로부터 형성된 집단적 보수성이 20세기의 거대한 사회적 변동기에 어떠한 형태로 드러나게 되는가를 분석하였다. 무엇보다 1920년대 바이마르 시기, 1940년대 후반 연합군점령 시기, 1970년대 독일연방공화국 시기에 시도된 교육제도 상의 개혁들에 어떠한 영향을 주었는가를 다루고 있다.

영문 초록

The Gymnasium represents the tradition of German education and remains the backbone of the education system today. The teachers who work at and support these schools also have a unique sense of elitism. This consciousness is expressed in their emphasis on distinguishing themselves from other types of schools and teachers, as well as their preoccupation with maintaining the existing education system. Various studies have highlighted Gymnasium teachers’ conservatism, focusing on aspects such as school systems, teaching methods, and teacher training. However, few studies have comprehensively analyzed this group. This study aims to examine the formation and development of the consciousness of German Gymnasium teachers from a historical perspective and clarify how it functioned socially by condensing its unique conservatism. We examine the status, position, and consciousness of teachers as they developed in the 19th century and analyze how the collective conservatism that emerged from it was revealed during the great social upheaval of the 20th century. Particularly, it addresses the influence of conservatism on education reforms attempted during the Weimar period in the 1920s, the Allied occupation period in the late 1940s, and the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s.
