국문 초록

본 연구는 박문수의 어사 활동에 대한 이력을 재확인해 보고, 봉명사신으로서 박문수의 역할이 무엇이었는가를 확인하고자 한다. 선행연구에서 지적된 박문수의 어사 활동 내역을 모두 확인하였으며 이를 통해 실제 이력을 재검토할 수 있었다. 실제 어사 이력 중에서 우리가 알고 있는 암행어사는 존재하지 않았으며, 넓은 의미에서 봉명사신으로서의 역할로 지방에 많이 파견되었다. 이러한 사실은 어사 설화를 통해 다수 전승되었다. 특히 경상도 지역에 봉명사신으로 많이 파견되면서 경상도에 그러한 설화가 많이 확인된다. 함경도의 경우에도 박문수는 많은 인상을 남겼다. 굶주린 백성들을 위해 박문수가 함경도에 쏟은 역할이 작지 않았기 때문이다. 당대 백성들 입장에서는 암행어사인지, 일반어사인지는 중요하지 않았다. 봉명사신으로 파견된 박문수는 경상도와 함경도 백성에게 강한 인상을 남겨 주었다. 그러한 기억을 통해 지역민들은 다수의 설화를 남길 수 있었다. 박문수의 봉명사신으로서의 활동과 의미는 충분한 역사적 사실과 더불어 설화를 통해 지금까지도 전해지고 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to reexamine Park Mun-su’s history of secret royal inspector activities and to determine what role Park Mun-su played as a royal inspector. All of Park Mun-su’s royal inspector activities pointed out in previous studies were confirmed, and through this, the actual history could be reexamined. Among the actual royal inspector histories, the royal inspector we know did not exist, and in a broad sense, he was dispatched to the provinces in the role of a royal inspector. This fact has been passed down through many royal inspector tales. In particular, many such tales can be found in Gyeongsang-do, as many royal inspectors were dispatched to the Gyeongsang-do region as royal inspectors. Park Mun-su also left a great impression on Hamgyeong-do. This is because the role he played in Hamgyeong-do for the starving people was not small. From the perspective of the people of the time, it did not matter whether he was a royal inspector or a general royal inspector. Park Mun-su, who was dispatched as a royal inspector, left a strong impression on the people of Gyeongsang-do and Hamgyeong-do. Through such memories, the local people were able to leave behind many tales. Park Mun-su’s activities and significance as a messenger of the king are still passed down to this day through folk tales as well as sufficient historical facts.
