히노 아시헤이의 ‘있는 그대로의 진실’과 보고문학

국문 초록

본고는 히노 아시헤이의 ‘병대삼부작’, 그 중에서도『보리와 병정』과『땅과 병정』을 중심으로 히노 아시헤이의 보고문학이 가진 한계를 분석한다. 히노 아시헤이의 ‘병대삼부작’은 서민에의 애정, 휴머니즘 등으로 평가받기도 하는 동시에 좀더 일반적으로는 국책문학으로서 비판받아 왔다. 하지만 이 지점에서 히노 아시헤이가 가진 이중적 스탠스를 좀더 구체적으로 살펴보아야만 한다. 히노는 로맨티시즘적 그리고 지식인적 시점에서 대상과의 거리감을 가지는 한편, 또 한편으로는 체험·실감·감정을 기반으로 ‘진실’을 공유하는 집단과의 동일화 과정이 일어난다. 이는 ‘있는 그대로의 진실’을 계속해서 강조하는 히노 아시헤이의 서술에서 재차 확인 가능하고, 이 개인적 체험과 감정을 보편적 ‘진실’로 만드는 인식 회로에 의해 히노는 집단의 논리를 ‘진리’로서 믿게 된다. 이는 당대의 문학장에서 문학(자)에게 요구하던 것이기도 하다. 또한 전후, 문화전범이 되어서도 자신의 잘못을 반성하지 않는 히노의 모습에서도 확인된다. 개인 차원의 감정이 휴머니즘 및 공유된 감정과 결합하며 ‘진리’의 자리를 획득하게 되는 히노의 맹목성은 반쪽짜리 휴머니즘으로서 개인을 집단에 동화시키는 내적 회로로 작동하는 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes the limitations of Hino Ashihei's reportage literature, focusing on his ‘Military Trilogy,’ particularly Barley and Soldiers and Earth and Soldiers. Hino Ashihei's ‘Military Trilogy’ has been both praised for its affection towards the common people and its humanism, while also being more generally criticized as a work of national policy literature. However, at this point, it is necessary to more closely examine the dual stance Hino Ashihei adopts. On one hand, Hino maintains a sense of distance from his subjects from a romantic and intellectual perspective, while on the other hand, he undergoes a process of identification with the group that shares the ‘truth’ based on experience, realism, and emotion. This is repeatedly confirmed in Hino Ashihei's writing, which continuously emphasizes the ‘truth as it is.’ Through the cognitive circuit that transforms personal experiences and emotions into a universal ‘truth,’ Hino comes to believe in the logic of the group as ‘truth.’ That was also what was demanded of literature (and writers) in the literary field of that time. This is also evident in Hino's postwar behavior, where he did not reflect on his wrongdoings even after becoming a cultural war criminal. Hino's blind faith, where personal emotions combined with humanism and shared sentiments come to occupy the place of ‘truth,’ operates as an internal mechanism that assimilates the individual into the group as a half-baked humanism.
