국문 초록

Objectives: This study aims to explore the mediating role of oral health in the relationship between household composition and mental health among the elderly population in Korea, using data from the ninth National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2022). Methods: From the 5,832 participants who completed the health, medical examination, and nutrition surveys in 2022, 1,552 individuals aged ≥65 years were selected for the final analysis. Results: The analysis revealed a significant mediating effect of oral health problems on the relationship between household composition and mental health. In the first stage, household composition significantly impacted oral health problems (β=-0.271, p<0.001), the mediating variable. In the second stage, household composition significantly affected mental health (β=-0.247, p=0.011). In the third stage, oral health problems significantly influenced mental health (β=0.301, p<0.001). These results indicate that the effect of household composition on mental health is fully mediated by oral health problems. Conclusions: The findings suggest that household composition affects mental health in the elderly population only through oral health. Effective management of oral health is crucial for enhancing the quality of life in elderly individuals.
