‘美’字의 形體 起源과 文化的 含義

국문 초록

『說文解字』(이하 『설문』)를 비롯한 古今의 각종 문자 연구서들에서는 ‘美’자가 어떠한 형체에 근거하여 造字되었는가에 대해 그 견해가 분분하였다. 說文學을 중심으로 하는 전통적인 자형 분석에 있어서는 양의 뿔을 형상화한 ‘羊’이 ‘美’자의 일부분이라 여겨 왔으나, 갑골문과 금문 등 실증적인 문자 자료들이 발굴 또는 발견됨으로써 이 학설에 대한 회의가 대두되었다. 그렇지만 ‘美’자 자형의 기원에 관해서 명확한 근거의 제시와 이를 통한 심도 있는 논의는 여전히 부족한 실정이어서 이에 대한 재고의 여지가 충분히 있다 할 수 있다. 이에 이 논문은 ‘美’자에 대한 기존의 견해들을 살펴보고, 갑골문 및 금문 등의 관련 문자 자료에 근거하여 ‘美’자의 형체 기원 및 그 특징에 관해 기술하였다. 또한 그 근거의 탐색을 위해 ‘美’자와 관련이 있는 것으로 여겨지는 해당 시기의 지하 출토 유물 자료들을 아울러 고찰해 봄으로써 ‘美’자의 형체 기원에 관한 몇 가지 실마리를 탐구하였다. 이러한 과정을 통해 ‘美’자의 일부에는 ‘羊’이 형상화 되었다는 기존의 학설과는 달리 새의 깃털을 형상화 한 것이며, ‘美’자는 곧 새를 토템으로 하였던 고대 중국인의 문화적인 배경에 의해 제작된 문자임을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

In a variety of books and literatures on letters including 『Shuowenjiezi(說文解字)』, there is a different interpretation on which shape the Letter ‘美’ is based on. In the traditional analysis of letter shape which studied focused on 『Shuowenjiezi(說文解字)』, scholars considered that the Letter ‘美’ contained the Letter ‘羊’ which shaped a sheep’s horns. But, the empirical evidences on the letter such as Oracle Bone Script(甲骨文) and Bronze Script(金文) were excavated or found, and so this theory has been doubtful. However, it is the fact that there is still insufficient presentation of clear evidence about the origin of the letter ‘美’, shape and no deep discussion on it. Therefore, there is a possibility of improvement for it. This study examined the existing views about the letter ‘美’, and described the shape origin and its characteristics of the letter ‘美’ based on the related letter data such as Oracle Bone Script(甲骨文) and Bronze Script(金文). Also. the study searched several clues to the shape origin of the letter ‘美’ by studying the unearthed remains of corresponding period which seems to be related to the letter ‘美’ for the search of its basis. It can be known that the feather of bird is shaped in the letter ‘美’, and ‘美’ is the letter made by the ancient Chinese people's cultural background which had a totem of bird, unlike the existing theory insisting that the letter ‘羊’ is shaped in the part of the letter ‘美’ through this process.
