국문 초록

우리 역사에서 갑오경장을 전후한 시기에는 외부로부터 새로운 사조가 밀려들면서 모든 분야에서 변화가 요구되었으며, 이러한 시대적 상황에서 한글은 국문으로서의 대우를 받게 되었다. 이 시기에 한글의 우수성은 대내외적으로 인정을 받았고 활용적 가치는 날로 증가하였으나, 실제로 어떻게 표기해야 하는지에 대해서는 통일된 안을 이루기 어려웠다. 이 글에서는 당시 국문 표기가 혼돈스러운 상황에서 한글의 실제 표기 양상을 보여 주는 문헌인 「國語綴字捷徑」(1908)을 분석해 보기로 한다. 이 자료는 기독교 선교사로 활동하던 Gale의 「한영자뎐」(1897)의 표기법을 바탕으로 하고 있으나, 당시의 한글 표기 양상을 모국어 화자의 관점에서 서술하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그리하여 한글 정서법의 역사적 흐름을 기술하는 작업 의 일환으로, 이 책을 통해 개화기 당시의 실제적인 한글 표기의 양상을 살펴보는 것은 매우 의미 있는 과정이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

In civilization period, a lot of changes were required in all fields due to the influx of new ideas from the outside world, and Hangeul was treated as a official letters of Korean language. Although Hangeul's excellence was recognized both internally and externally and its useful value increased day by day, it was difficult to achieve a unification on how to write it. This paper presents the observation that Korean writing system has been applied in the civilization period, through Han(1908). This book shows the actual writing patterns related to orthography in a situation where Korean writing was chaotic at that time. And we can look at the reality of the Korean writing system that was confusing in in many fields. The writing patterns of this book reflect the traditional Korean writing system used at that time. So, the ‘arae a’(ㆍ) was widely used, and the glottal sounds were marked by ‘ㅺ, ㅼ, ㅽ, ㅆ, ㅾ’, and ‘ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅅ, ㅇ’ were used as the syllable final consonants. But many changes of Korean writing system have happened in that time, it included the features of phonological and morphological causes which were different depending on the conditions. Based on the observation of Han(1908), it is necessary to discuss how the writing patterns were formed in this book and how it developed later, in order to analyze the flow of Korean writing system.
