한국과 중국의 드라마 캐릭터 비교

국문 초록

다양한 한류 콘텐츠가 국제적으로 관심을 받게 되면서 한류 드라마가 가진 스토리 전개의 특성에 대한 관심 역시 높아지고 있다. 특히 드라마의 서사를 이끌어가는 주연 및 조연의 캐릭터는 드라마 전개의 중요한 요인으로 볼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 Weiland(2016)가 제시한 캐릭터 아크의 개념을 사용하여 2019년에 인기를 얻은 한국 드라마 10편에서 등장하는 주연 및 조연 캐릭터를 분석하고, 이를 동일한 조건의 중국 드라마 10편과 비교하여 한국과 중국의 드라마 시청자가 가진 캐릭터 호감도에 대한 시사점을 얻고자 했다. 캐릭터 아크 개념은 드라마 등장인물의 캐릭터가 드라마의 전편에 걸쳐 고정적이 아니라 시간에 따라 변화하는 현상을 여러 유형으로 구분할 수 있다고 설명한다. 즉 드라마의 초반, 중반, 종반에 걸쳐 등장 인물이 진실 또는 거짓된 사실을 수용하는 여부에 따라 (1) 긍정적 변화, (2) 저항, (3) 탈바꿈, (4) 몰락, (5) 부패의 다섯 유형의 변화 과정으로 분류하여 설명한다. 이 모형은 기존의 단순한 고정적 캐릭터 개념이나 또는 입체적이지만 여전히 고정적인 캐릭터 개념과 비교하여 등장 인물의 변화 과정을 설명함으로써 드라마를 역동적으로 이끄는 유형을 제시한다. 본 연구에서는 2019년에 한국에서 가장 인기를 얻은 드라마들과 중국에서 가장 인기를 얻은 드라마들의 캐릭터 아크 유형을 비교함으로써 양국 시청자가 호감을 갖는 유형을 파악하는 것을 시도했다. 본 연구에서 발견한 점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 주연의 경우, 중국 드라마에서는 저항 유형이 집중적으로 나타나는 반면에 한국 드라마에서는 긍정적 변화/저항/탈바꿈 유형으로 분산된 경향을 보이는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 이는 중국에 비해 한국 드라마 시청자들은 더욱 역동적으로 변화하는 캐릭터 유형을 선호한다는 것을 보여준다. 둘째, 조연의 경우, 중국 드라마에서는 긍정적 변화 유형과 저항 유형에 집중되어 있는 반면에 한국 드라마에서는 모든 유형에 골고루 분산되어 있고, 특히 긍정적 변화 유형보다 부정적 변화 유형(탈바꿈/몰락/부패)이 더 지배적이라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이는 한국 드라마에서의 조연이 드라마의 전개에 있어서 높은 수준의 긴장을 조성하고 있음을 시사한다. 결론적으로 본 연구에서 캐릭터 아크 모형을 통해 분석한 한국의 인기 드라마들은 중국의 인기 드라마들에 비해 복잡하고 부정적 변화의 양상을 띠고 있었고 이것이 어쩌면 성공적인 한류 문화 콘텐츠의 특성을 적어도 일부 반영할 수 있다는 점을 발견했다.

영문 초록

As Han-Ryu(Korean Wave) contents are taking more and more attention, idiosyncratic features of Han-Rue drama are also being of interest. Especially, main and sub characters who lead storytelling of drama should be very important elements. Using Weiland(2017)’s Character Arc’s concept, this study investigated main and sub characters of the top ten dramas in 2019 in Korea and China, and compared to see if people in two countries have different favors on drama choice. The concept of character arc is that personal characters in drama are not fixed but changing over time and can be sorted into several types. That means, a specific persons’ arc character can be categorized in (1) positive change arc, (2) flat arc, (3) disillusionment arc, (4) fall arc and (5) corrupt arc, according to how the character is changing over the first, second, and third plot points in the drama. This character arc model suggests dynamic character types comapred to simple fixed character or even complex but still fixed character types. Comparing most favored dramas in Korea and China in the lens of character acr, this study tried to find what type of character arc was most popular in each country and found two things. First, for main characters, dramas in China showed that flat arc type was solely dominant, while dramas in Korea showed no single dominant type but positive change arc, flat arc, and disillusionment arc types were comparatively evenly distributed. This means that Koreans favor more changing and dynamic characters in drama watching. Second, for sub characters, dramas in China showed dominance of positive change arc and flat arc types, while dramas in Korea showed negative change types(disillusionment arc, fall arc, or corrupt arc types) were more popular than positive or flat arc types. This implies sub characters in Korean dramas creates higher level of tension in developing drama’s story development. In conclusion, character arc analysis on Korean and Chinese dramas tells us that Koreans dramas are more complex and even negative change streams compared to Chinese ones, and this may explain at lease a part of many characteristics of successful Han-Ryu cultural contents.
