무성서원 院規의 유래와 내용상의 특징

국문 초록

이 논문에서는 현재 1884년･1936년 판본 院誌에 수록되어 전해지고 있는 무성서원 院規의 유래와 그 내용상의 특징에 대해 고찰하였다. 먼저 李珥(1536~1584)의 <隱屛精舍學規>와 金元行(1702~1772)의 <石室書院學規>, 그리고 무성서원 원규의 조항별 대조를 통해 무성서원 원규가 <은병정사학규>와 <석실서원학규>를 종합하여 만들어진 것이 아니라 <석실서원학규>를 토대로 약간의 取捨와 修整 과정을 거쳐 만들어졌음을 확인하였다. 이에 따라 이 논문에서는 무성서원의 원규가 어떤 연유로 김원행의 <석실서원학규>를 원본으로 삼아 제정되었는지를 검토하였는데, 이와 관련하여서는 1762년(영조 38)에 김원행이 필암서원의 제3대 원장에 부임한 사실과 무성서원에 추배된 鄭彦忠(1491~1557)･金若默(1500~1558)･金灌(1575~1635) 3인과 필암서원의 主享인 金麟厚(1510~1560) 및 3대 원장 김원행 사이의 인연을 비롯한 무성서원과 필암서원의 밀접한 관계에 주목하였다. 다음으로 무성서원 원규의 내용상의 특징과 관련해서는 먼저 李滉(1501 ~1570)의 <이산원규> 제6번 조항에 뿌리를 두고 있는 무성서원 원규의 ‘書籍不得出門(서적은 문밖으로 나갈 수 없다)’ 조항에 대해 살펴보았다. 논문에서 고찰한 바에 따르면, <이산원규>의 ‘서부득출문’ 조항을 西人 계열의 서원 학규에 포함시킨 선례는 兪棨(1607~1664)와 朴世采(1631~ 1695)가 작성한 학규에서 찾을 수 있으며, 이후 김원행이 박세채의 모범을 따름으로써 김원행의 <석실서원학규>를 토대로 한 무성서원 원규에도‘서적부득출문’조항이 만들어지게 된 것으로 보인다. 무성서원 원규의 또 다른 내용상의 특징은 <석실서원학규>의 제2조와 제21조가 제외된 것에서 찾을 수 있다. <석실서원학규>제2조는 院長을 비롯한 院任의 선임과 그 임무에 관한 조항이고, 제21조는 매월 초하루와 보름에 거행하는 讀法에 관한 조항으로, 두 조항 모두 당시 서원의 교육과 운영에 기본이 되는 중요한 사항에 관한 것이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 두 조항이 무성서원의 원규로 채택되지 않은 것은 원규 제정 당시 무성서원이 상당한 운영상의 어려움을 겪고 있었기 때문이었을 것으로 추정된다. 서원철폐령과 함께 현감이 원장으로 부임하는 1871년 이전까지 무성서원에 ‘원장’이 존재하지 않았고, 춘추 향사 거행 기록이 없는 해도 여러 해였다는 사실 등이 당시 무성서원이 처해 있었던 어려운 상황을 대변한다. 다른 한편으로 <석실서원학규> 제2조와 제21조의 제외는 무성서원의 원규가 <석실서원학규>의 단순한 답습이 아니라 서원의 실정에 대한 院儒들의 냉정한 자기인식을 바탕으로 만들어졌음을 방증하는 것으로도 해석된다.

영문 초록

In this paper, the origin and characteristics of the academic regulations of Museong Seowon, which are currently included in the 1884 and 1936 edition of the Seowon historical Book, were examined. According to this, the academic regulations of Museong Seowon, which is currently handed down, was made based on “Seoksil Seowon Hakkyu” by Kim Won-haeng (1702~1772). Accordingly, in this paper, I first examined why the academic regulations of Museong Seowon was established with Kim Won-haeng's “Seoksil Seowon Hakkyu” as the original. In this regard, this paper paid attention to the fact that Kim Won-haeng was appointed as the third director of Pilam Seowon in a similar location in the same Jeolla-do area in 1762 (Yeongjo 38). Regarding the characteristics of the contents of the academic regulations of Museong Seowon, this paper reviewed two main points. First, I examined how Toegye Yi Hwang (1501~1570)'s “Isanwongyu” clause 6, which says, “Books cannot go out of the gate of Seowon,” was adopted as a rule of Museong Seowon, and I examined how important and difficult the management of books of Museong Seowon had been at that time. Second, I reviewed the reasons why articles 2 and 21 among Seoksil Seowon Hakkyu, which are provisions on the appointment of the director and reading activities on the academic regulations held on the 1st and 15th day of every month were not adopted as the academic regulations of Museong Seowon, even though they were the basic provisions for the education and operation of Seowon. According to the paper's consideration, the reason why the two provisions of Seoksil Seowon Hakkyu were not adopted as the academic regulations in Museong Seowon seems to be because Museong Seowon was in such a difficult situation that there was no director until 1871 and the memorial service for spring and fall was not properly held. On the other hand, it can be interpreted as evidence that the academic regulations of Museong Seowon were not simply followed by Seoksil Seowon Hakkyu, but were made based on a cool self-awareness of the reality of the Museong Seowon.
