국문 초록

본 연구에서는 Lee-Carter 모형(1992)을 적용하여 최근 일정기간 동안에 발생한 국가별 사망률의 개선과정을 비교·분석하였다. 원래 Lee-Carter 모형은 시간 경과에 따른 사망률의 개선추세를 확률적으로 모형화하고, 이를 기반으로 장래사망률을 추정하기 우해 제안된 것이다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 장래사망률을 추정하기보다 국가별 사망률의 개선추이를 비교하는데 주안점을 두고 Lee-Carter 모형을 활용하였다. 사망률개선 연구에서 Lee-Carter 모형이 가장 널리 활용되고 있는 모형임에도 불구하고, Lee-Carter 모형을 통해 국가별 추정결과를 비교하는 선행연구는 찾아보기 어려웠다. 본 연구에서는 Czado et al.(2005)가 제안한 계층적 베이지안 추정법을 이용해 모수의 추정치와 신뢰구간을 구하고, 국가별 추정결과를 비교하였다. 무엇보다 Lee-Carter 모형의 통합된 틀에서 추정된 모수를 비교했기 때문에 국가별, 연령구간별 특징을 수월하게 파악할 수 있었다. 분석 결과, 한국남성의 사망률 개선은 비교국가 중에서 가장 빠른 속도로 이루어졌고, 거의 모든 연령구간에서 고르게 진행된 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This paper intends to analyze the mortality improvements across several nations during the past couple of decades using the Lee-Carter model (1992). Originally, the Lee-Carter model was proposed to stochastically model mortality rates and project future mortality rates. But, in this paper, we employ the Lee-Carter model to compare the behavior of mortality improvement according to nations or age groups. Although the Lee-Carter model is the standard model for studying mortality improvements, there seems to be no previous literature which compares the estimation results across different countries using the Lee-Carter model. Based on the Bayesian estimation method proposed in Czado et. al. (2005), we obtain the parameter estimates and the confidence intervals. Because we compare the estimation result under the unified Lee-Carter framework, we could easily identify some interesting features of mortality improvement across nations or age groups. As is well-known, Korea has experienced the fastest mortality improvement over the period. Reconfirming the fact, we found that it has occurred more or less uniformly over each group compared with other countries.
