국문 초록

사경은 단순히 베껴 쓰는 경전의 의미라 하기보다는 경제적, 육체적, 정신적 노력이 함께한 공덕의 수단이며 그 결과물이다. 본문의 경전을 정성스럽게 필사하여 성불하고자 하는 마음과 부처님의 모습을 書로서 구현하고 있다. 발원자는 사경을 발원하면서 일일이 자신의 願과 그 과정을 기록함으로 자신의 신앙이 거듭나고자 하였다. 이러한 과정을 모두 합하여 보면 불교에 있어서 사경은 불도가 이룰 수 있는 가장 가깝게 부처님의 세계를 추구하는 것이고 불상이나 불화처럼 조성하여 모시는 예배의 대상일 뿐만 아니라 읽고 외우고 지니고 씀으로 무병장수와 극락왕생을 염원하는 가장 좋은 수단이라 할 수 있다. 예술적인 측면에서 볼 때도 사경의 표지와 변상도는 당시에 최고의 기술자가 아니면 그려낼 수 없는 초정밀기술이 필요하였고 본문의 필사 또한 당대 최고의 서자가 동원되었다는 것도 의심의 여지가 없다. 또한 경전에 대한 올바르고 완벽한 이해가 수반되어야 했으며 제작과정에 들어가는 여러 불교행사 및 법회를 비롯하여 하나의 사경을 제작하기 위해 불자들이 들이는 공력도 가장 많이 필요하다 할 수 있다. 이러한 제작기술과 과정은 정치경제가 어려웠던 고려시대와 억불의 시대였던 조선시대에도 이어지고 있다는 것은 불교예술 속에서 사경의 흔들림 없는 우수한 가치를 인정받은 것이라 생각한다.

영문 초록
