1960~70년대 소극장/운동을 기억하는 목소리들

국문 초록

본고는 연극인들의 구술채록본을 대상으로 1960~70년대 한국연극사의 소극장 혹은 소극장운동을 미시적으로 살펴보고, 그 중에서 ‘극단 자유극장’의 사례에 집중하여 당대 연극계를 고찰하였다. 이병복, 김정옥, 박정자의 구술사 채록본을 연구의 중심 텍스트로 삼았고, 한국문화예술위원회의 “한국근현대예술사 구술채록연구”에 참여했던 다수 연극인들의 구술채록본도 함께 검토하였다. 그 결과 구술채록본에서 길어 올린 다양한 목소리(기억)들이 상호작용을 하면서, 1960~70년대 동인제 극단과 소극장운동, 새로운 연극과 관객의 발견 등 시대적 키워드를 공유하는 지점을 포착할 수 있었다. 본고가 일반적인 사료와 달리 방대한 구술자료에서 구술자의 머뭇거림과 떨리는 말, 완결된 구성이 없는 구술 발화를 절단·채취하고 해석하다 보니, 구술자의 삶과 당시 연극계를 공시적으로 조망하기 어려웠던 한계가 있음을 밝힌다. 반면 1960~70년대 연극계의 침체와 활력, 혹은 연극 운동의 실제 분위기를 확인할 수 있었던 것은 구술이라는 형태를 띠면서 연행을 통해 생산된 기억들이 있었기 때문이다. 이 기억들은 연구 목적에 따라 기존 문헌들의 보완적 자료가 되어 줄 것으로 기대한다. 더불어 구술성과가 의미가 있는 것은 그것이 역사적 사실의 확증을 돕는 데 있는 것만이 아니라 구술채록에 참여한 모든 연극인들이 문화 생산과 향유의 주체였음을 전면화하고 있기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This paper carries out a microscopic examination of the small theaters or small theater movement in the 1960s’ and 70s’ within the Korean theater history, based on the memories and voices of the theater people. In so doing, I reconstructed the theater world at the time with the theater company, “Jayu Theater” at the center. While the transcripts of Yi Byeong-bok, Kim Jeong-ok and Pak Jeong-ja’s oral history were the central text of this research, oral history of a number of other theater people who participated in the “Oral History Project on Korean Modern and Contemporary Arts” initiated and managed by Arts Council Korea (ARKO) has also been examined. In the oral history, various voices (and memories) interacted, through which I could capture the moments where some of the shared keywords of the time cropped up including the 1960s’ and 70s’ coterie-base theater companies and small theaters, new drama and discovery of audience, and the like. In addition to the difficulties entailed in citing extensive oral history and extracting and interpreting oral utterances, in which the interviewees hesitate, get nervous, or talk without a complete structure, which is a process vastly different from citing general historical material, this research faced certain difficulties in producing a synchronic view of the lives of the interviewees or the theater world at the time with a sense of continuity. However, the form of oral history which produced memories that come from the very act of performance is what conveys the real sense of depression and vibrancy of the 1960s and 70s theater world, or the actual atmosphere of the theater movement at the time. It could be expected that these memories would serve as complementary material for existing written materials and documents depending on the research purpose. Also, oral account is significant in that it not only helps one confirm historical facts, but also brings to the fore that all theater people who participated in the oral history were the agents who both produced and enjoyed culture.
