현대 도자미술의 ‘내러티브’에 관한 연구

국문 초록

현대 도자미술의 딜레마에 관한 담론은 아직 끝나지 않았다. 도자미술만의 특수성들이 오히려 순수미술에서 더욱 소외되는 상황을 야기했던 지난 반세기 동안 가뜨 클락, 하워드 리자티, 멧 칼프, 래리 쉬너, 글렌 아담스 등이 제시한 해결책들은 스스로의 모순에 빠지거나, 전통 공예라는 역사의 자장에 끌려 다시 원점으로 회귀하는 양태를 보여 왔다. 이에 본 연구에서는 현대 도자미술의 문제점을 전통 공예가 추구했던 유미주의의 과잉과 협소한 그린버스식 모더니즘의 무분별한 수용으로 진단하고, 그 대안으로 20세기 후반에 복귀한 내러티브미술을 통해 제시하고자 한다. 연구방법은 부르스 멧칼프의 「Replacing the Myth of Modernism」, 크렉 오웬스의 『The Art of Art History: A critical Anthology』, 글렌 아담슨(Glenn Adamson)의『Thinking through craft』와 로날드 슈라이퍼의 『Rhetoric and Death-The language of Modernism and Postmodernism Discourse Theory』를 중심으로 문헌 연구를, 실증적 사례를 위한 분석대상은 본 연구자의 작품을 중심으로 했다. 이를 통해서 분석한 본 연구자의 내러티브 작품의 특징은 ‘타나토스’, ‘은유’, ‘블랙 유머’, ‘몸’으로 분류되었다. 첫째, ‘타나토스’는 프로이트가 언급한 죽음에 관한 충동으로 연구자의 작품 전체를 관통하는 일관적인 주제이다. 타나토스는 문명사에 가려진 억압된 것들의 회기이자 트라우마의 탐닉으로 해석할 수 있다. 둘째, ‘은유’는 원관념을 효과적으로 전달하기 위한 보조관념을 등장시키는 수사법이다. 연구자의 작품에서 인간의 감정을 직설적으로 나타내지 않고 보조관념인 돼지를 통해서 비유적으로 표현된다. 셋째, ‘블랙 유머’는 카니발 그로테스크의 가장 핵심적인 언어로 풍자와 해학을 통해서 제도와 관습을 전복시키려는 함의를 지니고 있다. 넷째, ‘몸’은 20세기 후반 포스트모더니즘의 영향으로 가장 주목받은 신체미술을 의미한다. 연구자 작품 속에 등장하는 돼지의 몸은 모더니즘의 데카르트적 형이상학에 대한 비판의 장이다. 연구자의 작품에서 발견되는 이러한 내러티브의 언어들은 공예적 유미주의와 모더니즘의 형식주의를 지양한 새로운 시각언어로서 도자미술 표현의 다양성에 기여하기를 바란다.

영문 초록

The discourses on the dilemma of contemporary ceramic art haven t been finished yet. During the last half century in which the specificity of ceramic art has made itself alienated from the mainstream of fine art, the solutions that Garth Clark, Howard Risatti, Bruce Metcalf, Larry Shinner, and Glenn Adamson have suggested contradicted themselves or returned to the starting point being attracted into the history of traditional craft. This research suggests the alternatives through the narrative arts that returned in the late 20th century, diagnosing the problems of contemporary ceramic art as the excess of aestheticism and indiscriminate acceptance of narrowish Greenberg s modernism. As the research method, literature research was conducted centering on Bruce Metcalf s 「Replacing the Myth of Modernism」, Cragg Owens 『The Art of Art History: A critical Antholog y』, Glenn Adamson s 『Thinking through craft』and Ronald Schleifer s『Rhetoric and Death-The language of Modernism and Postmodernism Discourse Theory』and the artist to be analyzed for empirical cases was conducted centering on researcher s artworks. The characteristics of researcher s artworks are categorized into Thanatos , metaphor , black humor , and body through the analysis. Firstly, Thanatos is a consistent theme in the researcher s artworks that Freud mentioned as death impulse. Thanatos can be interpreted into the return of the repressed or the indulgence in trauma. Secondly, Metaphor is a rhetoric that refers to one thing by mentioning another thing. The meaning of the researcher s artworks are conveyed indirectly through the swine s emotion. Thirdly, Black Humor connotes disapproval that overthrows institutions and customs through satire and humor. Fourth, Body refers to the body art that attracted the most attention because of the influence of postmodernism in the late 20th century. The swines body in the researchers artworks is the venue of criticism on Cartesian metaphysics. These new languages in the researcher s artworks are important elements of the narrative art sublating aestheticism and modernism, and this paper will be expected to contribute to the diversity of ceramic art.
