국문 초록

유물론은 세계는 물질로 이루어져 있으며 정신이나 의식 따위는 물질의 산물이라고 보는 이론이다. 이처럼 세계를 물질로 파악하는 유물론은 과학에 절대적 지위를 부여하는 과학주의, 인간의 자유가 허구적임을 주장하는 결정론, 인간의 감각만이 물질뿐인 세계를 그대로 알려준다는 감각주의, 인간 지성에 파악될 수 없는 신의 존재를 부정하는 무신론적 입장을 취하고 있다. 이러한 유물론의 네 가지 특성을 비판적으로 성찰하는 것이 본 논고의 목적이다. 따라서 이글은 첫째로, 과학의 성과를 인정하면서도 그것의 범위와 한계를 지적하고 과학주의의 자체 모순에 관해 언급한다. 둘째로, 현대 뇌과학과 관련하여 결정론의 의미를 간단히 살피고 인간의 자유를 실존적, 윤리적 관점에서 제시한다. 셋째로, 인식의 기초를 이루고 있는 인간의 감각과, 감각이 경험하는 세계와의 관계를 바탕으로, 감각의 능력과 한계를 설명한다. 마지막으로 현대과학의 흐름속에서의 무신론과 유신론의 세계관의 차이를 비교한다. 이를 통해, 아무리 신이 과학적으로 드러나지 않는다고 해서 신에 대한 무신론적 단정은 과학을 넘어선 형이상학적인 문제임을 지적한다. 유물론은 인간이 살아가는 데 있어서 물질이 존재하고 중요하다는 기본적인 인식을 제공하지만, 원래의 철학은 인간에게 물질 너머의 것을 볼 것을 요구한다.

영문 초록

Materialism is the theory that the world is composed of materials, and spirit and consciousness is merely the product of material. Such a materialism which understands the world as to material takes a position of scientism; gives absolute position to science, determinism; asserting the freedom of human being is fictional, sensationalism; asserting that only the human senses can inform the world which is merely material, and atheism; denying the existence of God who never be understood by human intelligence. The purpose of this study is to introspect critically on these 4 characteristics of materialism. Firstly, this study mentioned the contradiction of scientism itself while admitting its outcomes and pointing out its scope and limitation. Secondly, this study briefly look at the meaning of determinism connectedly modern brain science, then propose the freedom of human being from the point of existence and ethics. Thirdly, this study explained the capability and the limitation of sense based on the relation with human senses which are the basis of consciousness and the world where senses are experiencing. Lastly, this study compared the difference of the world view between atheism and theism in the stream of modern science. Through these, this study points out that the atheistic determination is metaphysical matter beyond the science, even though God is not exposed scientifically. Materialism offers the basic consciousness that the material exists and is important in human life, but the original philosophy demands on human being to see the thing beyond the material.
